Originally, ancestors from Harbin used Ice Lanterns as a cost-effective light source while working in cold regions during late nights. They would freeze water to create an ice casing and place oil lamps or candles inside. The ice acted as a barrier against the wind, forming the early prototype of today’s Ice Lantern.

The celebrated Harbin Ice Lantern show, with a long history dating back to 1943, is now held in the city park (Zhaolin park).
