• German Brazilian Municipality eV - Meet your guide at the Market Church, the main Lutheran church in Hanover. Constructed in the 14th century, it is renowned as a prime example of North German brick Gothic architecture. Although partially destroyed by an air raid in 1943, it was later restored. Its towering western spire once symbolized the power and wealth of the town’s citizens and remains a significant city landmark.

Admire the Old Town Hall, which took about a century to build, showcasing Romanesque influences and Neo-Gothic architecture. Your guide will explain the portraits of princes and coats-of-arms featured on the building’s murals.

Nearby, discover another landmark, the Ballhof Building, originally a sports hall for ball games sheltered from the elements. It also served as an assembly hall and later as a theater. Continue through the winding alleys to Kreuz-Church, Hanover’s oldest church, dating back to 1333. Like much of the Old Town, it was mostly destroyed during WWII and reconstructed afterward.

Proceed to the Oskar-Winter-Fountain, a local fountain with an intriguing story. Legend has it that if you make a wish and turn the small brass ring embedded in the ironwork, your wish will come true. Behind the fountain stands the Leibniz House, where mathematician and philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) once lived.

Next, visit the Aegidien Church, a poignant reminder of the horrors of war. Destroyed during WWII, it was never rebuilt. Within the ruins, you can see the Peace Bell, a gift from the city of Hiroshima. Each year, on August 6th at 08:15, a delegation from Hiroshima rings the bell in memory of those who perished in the air strike.

Continue to the final tourist attraction, the New Town Hall. When it was inaugurated by Emperor Wilhelm II, the City Director declared: “Ten million Marks, Your Majesty – and all paid for in cash.”
