Sailing into Serenity: My Journey on the Dragon Legend Cruise
Eager to explore Halong Bay, I embarked on the Dragon Legend Cruise for a unique journey to Bai Tu Long Bay. This two-day adventure promised an off-the-beaten-path experience, and I was ready to discover the natural beauty and local life away from the crowds.
Setting Sail on the Dragon Legend
After months of backpacking through Southeast Asia, I found myself in Hanoi, eager to explore the famed Halong Bay. The Dragon Legend Cruise promised a unique journey to Bai Tu Long Bay, a less crowded alternative to the usual tourist spots. I was intrigued by the idea of a two-day, one-night cruise that would take me off the beaten path.
The journey began with a comfortable ride from Hanoi in a luxury van, complete with water, device charging facilities, and Wi-Fi. It was a nice change from the usual budget buses I had been taking. However, the tourist trap toilet stop halfway through the journey was a bit of a letdown. I could have done without the water puppet and rice-making demonstration on the return trip, as I had already experienced both during my travels.
Upon arrival at the harbor, I was greeted by the friendly staff of the Dragon Legend #1. Their warm welcome set the tone for the rest of the trip. The boat itself was impressive, with spacious and comfortable rooms that even included a bathtub. It was a luxury I hadn’t experienced in a while, and I was eager to relax and enjoy the scenery.
Exploring Bai Tu Long Bay
As we set sail, I was captivated by the stunning formations of Bai Tu Long Bay. The itinerary included a visit to the Thien Canh Son Cave, where I marveled at the hidden beauty within. The white sandy beach at Hon Co Island was a perfect spot for swimming and kayaking, and I took full advantage of the opportunity to soak in the natural beauty.
The guides on the cruise were incredibly friendly and had a great attitude, but I found myself wanting to learn more about the history and culture of Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay. With only two guides for 40 people, it was understandable that in-depth information was limited. Nevertheless, the activities were well-paced, allowing us to enjoy the surroundings without feeling rushed.
The food on board was a highlight, with delicious multi-course meals that were a bit of a marathon. As a seafood lover, I was in heaven, but I could see how it might be overwhelming for some. The lack of Wi-Fi on the boat was a blessing in disguise, as it encouraged me to put my phone down and fully immerse myself in the experience.
A Memorable Farewell
As the cruise came to an end, I reflected on the experience. The check-out process could have been smoother, with a lot of waiting around to pay. It would have been nice to have access to the rooms for the entire morning on the last day, but I understood the need for a quick turnaround.
While the exclusivity of the cruise was not as advertised, with other boats often in proximity, it was still a peaceful escape compared to other tours in Halong Bay. The staff’s willingness to hotspot Wi-Fi for those in need was a thoughtful touch, and their efforts to make us feel welcome were appreciated.
Overall, the Dragon Legend Cruise was a fantastic way to experience the beauty of Halong Bay. Despite a few minor hiccups, I would recommend it to anyone looking to explore this natural wonder. It was a refreshing break from my usual backpacking adventures, and I left with a newfound appreciation for the tranquility of Bai Tu Long Bay.
