- Lake of the Restored Sword (Hoan Kiem Lake) - Legend has it that King Le Loi discovered a gleaming metal bar during a visit to a friend, who had caught it while fishing. The King requested the bar, took it home, and fashioned it into a sword. Miraculously, the words “Thuan Thien” (harmonious with heaven) appeared on the sword.
King Le Loi realized the sword was a divine gift and used it in battle against a neighboring nation. In early 1428, after peace was achieved, a tortoise emerged from Thuy Quan Lake (now Hoan Kiem Lake) and called out, “Please return the sword to the Dragon King.” The King promptly threw the sword into the lake, where the tortoise retrieved it and disappeared underwater. Since then, Thuy Quan has been known as Hoan Kiem Lake.
