Cao Bang - The journey begins with a drive towards the Chinese border, lasting about 3 hours, before pausing at Chi Lang Pass. This 20-km-long gorge, formed by a narrow valley between two mountains, holds significant historical importance for Vietnam, having been the site of numerous victories against Chinese invasions dating back to 981 AD. It is renowned as Vietnam’s strongest citadel and bastion. You will have approximately an hour to explore the area around the Quy Mon Quan Gate, known as “The Gate of Monsters,” named for the many invading forces that passed through the pass only to be repelled by resilient Vietnamese defenders. After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant in Dong Dang, the journey continues through the pass, with stops at Mother’s Temple and Dong Khe – a key historical site where The Battle of Dong Khe occurred during the First Indochina War. This was the inaugural battle of the Indochina Wars, with fighting taking place in September and October 1950, culminating in a decisive victory for the Viet Minh. In the evening, enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at a local homestay operated by a Nung family.
CAO BANG - BAN GIOC WATERFALL - BA BE (B/L/D)
Ban Gioc Waterfall - Detian Falls - After breakfast at the homestay, depart for Trung Khanh, located on the border with China. Here, you will have the opportunity to meet and interact with the local Nung people in the village of Phuoc Sen, known for its traditional blacksmithing. The farming tools crafted here are essential to the lifestyle, evident in the surrounding rice paddies and fields. Amidst these stunning landscapes lies the breathtaking Ban Gioc Waterfall, spanning over 300 meters and shared between Vietnam and China. You’ll have time to soak in the incredible atmosphere around the falls, offering a perfect chance for fantastic photography. After visiting the falls, head to Nguom Ngao Cave, a different but equally impressive natural wonder. The cave extends for 2,144 meters underground, filled with remarkable stalactites and stalagmites.
Ba Be - Return to Cao Bang town and proceed down the “snake pass” to Ba Be Lake, where you will stay overnight in a homestay built in traditional Tay style and operated by a local Tay family. Here, you can relax and unwind from the day, enjoying a delicious and authentic home-cooked meal.
BA BE - HANOI (B/L)
Ba Be National Park - After breakfast, the final day of the tour begins with a boat ride on the lake. You can choose to relax and enjoy the views or take a swim in the cool waters to refresh yourself. The scenery features stunning karst formations covered with patches of wild vegetation and rich wildlife. The boat will continue along the Nang River, allowing you to explore the caves of Puong Grotto, where you can admire the stalactites and stalagmites formed by river erosion, and observe the large bat colony residing there. As the tour concludes, you’ll be driven approximately 230 kilometers back to Hanoi, with a stop at a tea plantation nestled among rolling hills. Upon arrival in Hanoi, it’s time to bid farewell, having created lifelong memories and connections.
