- Jinghang Grand Canal Hangzhou - Explore Gongchen Bridge (拱辰桥)
Spanning the Grand Canal from east to west, Gongchen Bridge marks the southern end of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. It is the largest stone bridge in Hangzhou.
The people of Hangzhou hold a deep affection for this bridge, which symbolizes home and evokes cherished memories. Gongchen Bridge is rich in history and has royal connections, with “Gongchen” meaning “salute the emperors.” Each autumn, a fireworks display used to attract thousands of visitors, but in 2013, it was banned due to safety concerns and financial considerations.
Gongchen Bridge was constructed in the 4th year of Emperor Chongzhen’s reign during the Ming Dynasty (1631) and underwent a complete restoration in 1888 during Emperor Guangxu’s reign. Measuring 98 meters long and 16 meters high, it features three arches. It borders Qiaoxi Historic Block to the west and Yunhe Culture Square to the east. This area is one of the top three cultural and entertainment hubs along the Grand Canal (Hangzhou section), offering six modern museums, boutique restaurants, unique shops, and timeless alleyways.
