Ahu Akahanga - According to oral history, which is the primary historical source of the island, the remains of Rapa Nui’s first king, Hotu Matu’a, are said to be here, although they are missing. Visitors can also see an original village with its structures and platforms, with moai standing in front.
Rano Raraku - This is the quarry where approximately 98% of Rapa Nui’s moai were carved. Here, one can observe these impressive figures in various stages of construction, some still attached to the rock, providing insight into how they were crafted by the ancient Rapanui.
Ahu Tongariki - Known as the largest ceremonial center in the Pacific, Ahu Tongariki had to be restored after a massive tidal wave caused by the Valdivia earthquake. The restoration was made possible by the significant contributions of Tadano and Sano, of Japanese origin. This site is famously known as the 15 Moai platform.
Ahu Te Pito Kura - This site is home to the largest moai ever erected on its platform, the moai Paro. Standing at an impressive 10 meters tall and weighing about 88 tons, it is the largest on its platform. Nearby is a mysterious magnetic round stone known to disorient compasses and possess unique energies.
Anakena Beach - Originally named Hanga Rau or Te Ariki, meaning ‘the king’s landing bay’, Anakena was the chosen place for the people led by King Hotu Matu’a to colonize the island. Over time, it became an exclusive area for royalty. Anakena boasts a unique white sand beach, crystal clear waters, and is nestled between palm trees and Moai.
Rapa Nui: From Origins to Bird Man
Puna Pau - Puna Pau, the ancient red slag quarry, is where the pukao that crown the moai were carved. It is a tranquil place that reflects the prestige and power of the Rapa Nui clans.
Ahu Akivi - Ahu Akivi features seven moai lined up facing the horizon, enveloped in the mystery of stories linking them to the first navigators who arrived on the island.
Ana Te Pahu - Ana Te Pahu Cave served as a refuge and living space, where traces of ancient crops and the ingenious adaptation of the Rapa Nui people to their environment can still be observed.
Orongo - Situated at the top of the Kau Frog, this stone village brings to life the Birdman rite and its ancestral mystery.
Rano Kau - Rano Kau is a volcanic crater with an inner lagoon surrounded by cliffs, offering a landscape that blends nature and mysticism.
Ahu Vinapu - Vinapu is a ceremonial site renowned for its precisely carved stone walls, often compared to Inca constructions.
Ahu Huri a Urenga - Ahu Huri a Urenga features a unique altar with a four-handed moai, associated with astronomical and spiritual functions.
