Day 1

Ahu Akahanga - Situated on the island’s southeast coast, this site is iconic. Here, you can see how the village was organized around the ceremonial center, or ahu. Observing the toppled giants is a remarkable experience.

Rano Raraku - This is the island’s sole volcanic cone tuff quarry, which enabled the large-scale construction of the moai. Rano Raraku contains the quarry where the moai were crafted and from where they were transported to the island’s ahu (ceremonial platforms).

Ahu Tongariki - Located across from Rano Raraku, this is the largest of all the reconstructed platforms on the island. Ahu Tongariki is the most impressive moai platform, featuring fifteen standing statues that face the island with their backs to the Pacific Ocean.

Ahu Te Pito Kura - Measuring 11 meters in length and weighing around 90 tons, this site features the largest moai transported from Rano Raraku: Ahu o Paro. Nearby, you’ll find the famous rounded stone called Te Pito ‘o te Henua, which, according to tradition, was brought to the island by the ancestors.

Anakena Beach - Known for its warm turquoise waters and coral sand, Anakena Beach is the island’s main beach and was once the ancestral home of the Miru Araki royal family. The ahu Nau Nau is one of the island’s most refined ahu due to the craftsmanship of its moai.

Day 2

Orongo - Orongo village is located on the side of the Rano Kau volcano crater. It is one of the island’s two main sites, known for hosting the Birdman ceremony.

Rano Kau - Located on the island’s southwest side, this volcano’s crater is one of Rapa Nui’s most stunning natural landscapes. Spanning 1.5 km, the crater is the largest reserve of Rapa Nui’s endemic flora and its lake was a crucial source of drinking water in ancient times.

Ahu Vinapu - This archaeological site is notable for the fine craftsmanship of Rapa Nui’s ancient builders. Some theories suggest a possible connection between the construction of this platform and Inca architectural styles.

Ahu Tahai - Restored in 1974 by American archaeologist Dr. William Mulloy, Tahai includes three main ahu from north to south: Ko Te Riku (with restored eyes), Tahai, and Vai Ure. Its proximity to town makes it a popular spot for sunset photos.

Puna Pau - This quarry provided the red volcanic stone used to carve the Pu Kao, or moai’s hair. Here, you can see 23 cylindrical Pu Kao prototypes in early stages of carving, ready for transport to the ahu. The site also offers a great view of Hanga Roa village.

Ahu Akivi - One of the few ceremonial platforms not located by the sea, its seven moai were restored to their standing positions by archaeologists William Mulloy and Gonzalo Figueroa, along with the Rapa Nui community. These moai are uniquely positioned to align with astronomical events, facing the setting sun.
