During the 14th and 15th centuries, it was home to one of the most renowned medieval universities in Armenia, the University of Tatev. This educational institution significantly contributed to the progress in fields of science, religion, philosophy, book reproduction, and the evolution of miniature art. Tatev University’s scholars played a vital role in safeguarding Armenian culture and beliefs during one of the most unstable eras of its history.
The monastery is the most famous landmark in Syunik. In October 2010, the ‘Wings of Tatev’ - a cable car track from Tatev to Halidzor village was inaugurated. It holds a Guinness World Records title for being the ‘longest uninterrupted double track cableway.
