Hakone
Hakone Shrine - Nestled at the base of Mount Hakone along the shores of Lake Ashinoko, Hakone Shrine (箱根神社, Hakone Jinja) is a serene retreat. The shrine’s structures are enveloped by a lush forest, yet its presence is marked by grand torii gates, one of which stands majestically in the lake, while two others grace the main street of Moto-Hakone.
A scenic path leads from the torii gate in Lake Ashinoko, ascending through a series of lantern-lined steps in the forest to the main shrine building, which rests tranquilly among towering trees. The shrine is stunning year-round, with a particularly enchanting allure when enveloped in mist.
Another shrine, Mototsumiya (“original shrine”), is located at the peak of Komagatake, one of Mount Hakone’s many summits. It can be reached via the Hakone Komagatake Ropeway from Hakone-en or by hiking trails.
Hakone - Situated in Japan’s Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, west of Tokyo, Hakone is a picturesque town renowned for its hot spring resorts (onsen) and breathtaking views of the iconic Mount Fuji. The area includes Hakone Shrine, a Shinto shrine with a striking red “torii” gate overlooking Lake Ashi, which visitors can explore by boat, as well as the steaming sulphur springs of the Owakudani Valley.
KYOTO
Kyoto - Once the capital of Japan, Kyoto is a city on Honshu island celebrated for its numerous classical Buddhist temples, exquisite gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines, and traditional wooden houses. It is also famed for its cultural practices, such as kaiseki dining, which features multiple courses of meticulously prepared dishes, and the presence of female entertainers, particularly in the Gion district.
TOKYO
Tokyo - As Japan’s bustling capital, Tokyo offers a dynamic blend of the ultramodern and the traditional, from its neon-lit skyscrapers to its historic temples. The splendid Meiji Shinto Shrine is renowned for its towering gate and surrounding forest. The Imperial Palace is set amidst expansive public gardens. The city’s diverse museums showcase exhibits ranging from classical art (in the Tokyo National Museum) to a reconstructed kabuki theater (in the Edo-Tokyo Museum).
