Exploring Hidden Gems: My Unforgettable Cat Ba Island Adventure
In search of a unique adventure, I embarked on the Cat Ba Island Adventure, a three-day journey through less touristy areas of Vietnam. From kayaking in Lan Ha Bay to trekking in Cat Ba National Park, the experience was a perfect blend of nature and culture.
Setting Sail on Cat Ba Island
As a digital nomad, I often find myself seeking out unique and budget-friendly adventures across Southeast Asia. When I heard about the Cat Ba Island Adventure and its promise of exploring less touristy areas, I knew it was a must-do. The journey began with a boat trip from Cat Ba Island, a more serene starting point compared to the bustling Ha Long City. The first day was filled with swimming and kayaking in the tranquil waters of Lan Ha Bay. The highlight was undoubtedly the panoramic view from the top of a stiff rock mountain, which required a bit of rock climbing—a challenge I eagerly embraced.
Our guide, Tuang, or Tony as he preferred, was a bundle of energy and humor. He kept us entertained during dinner with his stories and jokes, making the evening on the boat a memorable one. Sleeping on the boat in a quiet lagoon, away from the crowds, was a peaceful experience that set the tone for the days to come.
Trekking Through Viet Hai Village
The second day took us to Viet Hai Village, a charming spot nestled within Cat Ba National Park. The journey there involved a 5km bicycle ride through picturesque landscapes, including rice fields and valleys. However, the real adventure began with a trek through the rain-soaked trails of the national park. The previous day’s rain had left the paths muddy and slippery, making the hike a bit treacherous. Despite the challenges, our guide Ninh was incredibly patient and supportive, ensuring we navigated the trail safely.
Viet Hai Village itself was a delightful experience. The locals were welcoming, and I even indulged in a fish massage at a pond—a quirky and fun way to relax after the hike. Lunch at a local house offered a taste of authentic home-cooked Vietnamese cuisine, a treat for any food lover. Despite the muddy trails, the trek was a rewarding experience, offering breathtaking views from Navy Peak.
Kayaking in Ha Long Bay
The final day was perhaps the most magical. We ventured into Ha Long Bay, where the limestone islands rose majestically from the emerald waters. Kayaking through hidden lagoons and tunnels was an exhilarating experience, and the sight of langurs in the trees added a touch of wonder to the day. Our guide Bing was a gem, sweet and accommodating, ensuring everyone had a fantastic time.
I was so captivated by the beauty of the bay that I decided to extend my trip by an extra day. The additional day offered more opportunities for swimming and langur sightings, with Hang, our guide, entertaining us with his magic tricks and infectious enthusiasm. The entire experience with Cat Ba Ventures was nothing short of magical, and I left with a heart full of memories and a camera full of stunning photos.
For those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure in Vietnam, the Cat Ba Island Adventure is a journey worth taking. Whether you’re a solo traveler like me or exploring with friends, the blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and the warmth of the guides makes it an unforgettable trip.
