During peak birthing season from the start of January to the end of February, around 8,000 wildebeest babies are born daily. This time of year lures a great number of predators seeking an easy feed on the defenseless younglings. As such, the southern part of Serengeti and the western zone of the Ngorongoro Crater become the most densely populated areas with predators in Africa.
Cheetahs, lions, and hyenas appear in full force, roving the grasslands, eyeing for the ideal moment to hunt. However, it’s not always possible to score an easy prey. Maternal wildebeests instinctively move to the shorter grass plains to better spot the preying enemies. They form a protective circle around the birthing females, to guard them and the newborns at their most susceptible phase - birth, thus ensuring a greater survival rate for the young ones.
