En route, explore the Dambulla Rock Temple, constructed by King Walagambahu in the 1st Century B.C. Dambulla is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area features over 80 documented caves, with ceiling paintings. There are 153 Buddha statues, 3 statues of Sri Lankan kings, and 4 statues of gods and goddesses.
Sigiriya-Anuradhapura-Mihintale
Anuradhapura Stupas Scenic Point - Visit Anuradhapura, a city established in the 5th century BC, with archaeological evidence dating back to the 10th century BC. King Pandukabhaya designed the city layout and made it his capital in the 4th century BC, constructing numerous reservoirs and shrines. By the start of the Christian era, the city had reached its peak magnificence, boasting some of the most advanced irrigation systems of the ancient world. Anuradhapura features three main types of ruins: Dagobas (bell-shaped masonry structures), Monastic Buildings, and Pokunas (bathing tanks/water supply tanks). Key attractions include Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwalwelisaya, Thuparamaya, Lovamahapaya, Jethavanaramaya, Abhayagiri Dageba, Mirisawati Stupa, and Lankaramaya. Mihintale is celebrated as the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
Sigiriya-Polonnaruwa-Minneriya National Park
Polonnaruwa Vatadage - Discover the ruins of the Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu, the Audience Hall, the statue of King Parakramabahu, Watadage, the Galpotha, and Parakrama Samudraya (Sea of Parakrama), which spans 5940 acres and was built by King Parakramabahu I. The elegant Lotus Pond was constructed in the 12th century. The Gal Vihara, also known as Gal Viharaya, is a rock temple of the Buddha located in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa in north-central Sri Lanka. Built in the 12th century by Parakramabahu I, the shrine’s central feature is four Buddha images carved into a large granite rock. These include a large seated figure, a smaller seated figure inside an artificial cavern, a standing figure, and a reclining figure. These are considered some of the finest examples of ancient Sinhalese sculpting and carving arts, making the Gal Vihara one of Polonnaruwa’s most visited monuments.
Minneriya National Park - This 8,890-hectare park is located near the Minneriya Reservoir.
Sigiriya-Matale-Kandy
Kandy District - Ascend the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, regarded as one of the world’s most remarkable creations, built by King Kashyapa (477-495 AD). A path through the gardens and stone stairways leads to the Lion Gate. Today, only the rock carving and brick structure remain of the lion’s mouth, through which millions have walked to admire this magnificent citadel. Continue to Kandy, with stops at Indigenous Industries – Ayurveda Herbal Gardens & Wood Carving. Visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic and enjoy an evening cultural show featuring traditional drumming (Kandy dance). Overnight stay in Kandy.
Kandy-Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya - After breakfast, tour Kandy and shop for souvenirs. Visit the Royal Botanical Garden and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a Buddhist temple in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, it houses the relic of Buddha’s tooth. Travel to Nuwara Eliya, journeying through scenic mountains to the tea-producing town, with a stop at a traditional tea plantation in the central highlands to learn about tea cultivation and its impact on the Ceylon region. Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya.
Nuwara Eliya-Ella-Tissa
Nine Arches Bridge - After breakfast, depart from Nuwara Eliya. Enjoy an optional scenic train ride from Nanu Oya to Ella, then proceed to Udawalawe National Park or Yala National Park, stopping at Rawana Falls. Enjoy an evening safari by jeep. Overnight stay in Tissa.
Ella Rock - Depending on time availability, visit the Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak.
Tissa-Yala National Park-Galle-Hikkaduwa
Yala National Park - Embark on an early morning jeep safari at Yala National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s premier eco-tourism destinations, located 24km northeast of Tissamaharama and 290km from Colombo on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka, covering 97,878 hectares.
Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications - Travel to Colombo, stopping at Galle Dutch Fort. The Portuguese initially built the fort to withstand attacks from the Sri Lankan kingdoms to the north. The Dutch entrance to the fort, with its VOC emblem and 1669 carved in the inner archway, remains in use. Visit the Dutch Museum at 31 Leynbaan Street for insights into life during the Dutch East India Company era.
Hikkaduwa-Bentota-Colombo-Airport
Moonstone Mines and Gem Palace - Ambalangoda, a city along the south coast road, is renowned for devil dancing and mask making. Visit the mask museum and factory, as well as the Moonstone mine. Moonstones are beautiful stones that appear white and shimmer blue when viewed from an angle.
