Ritigala Mountain, standing at 766 meters above sea level, is the highest mountain in the north-central dry plains of Sri Lanka. The mountain, approximately three miles long and two miles wide at its broadest point, is covered with dense jungle inhabited by wild elephants, leopards, and bears. It serves as the watershed for the Malwatu Oya, which feeds the Nachaduwa tank, and Kalueba Ela, which feeds Huruluwewa. Ritigala Mountain has been designated a Strict Natural Reserve to preserve its pristine environment. The mountain’s cloud cover and mist, present most of the year, have resulted in flora more commonly found in the central hills of the wet zone than in the dry plains. The upper part of the mountain is renowned for its flora, some of which are rare, and it also boasts a variety of wild orchids.
- Kala Wewa - Constructed by King Datusena in 307 B.C., Kala Wewa is a twin reservoir complex (Kala Wewa & Balalu Wewa) with a capacity of 123 million cubic meters. This reservoir complex features a stone spillway and three main sluices. From the central major sluice, a 40-foot-wide channel conveys water to irrigate thousands of acres of paddy fields and ends at the historic capital Anuradhapura city tank, Tissa Wewa, meandering over 87 km (54 mi) at a slope of 6 inches per mile. It is another marvel of ancient hydraulic engineering in Ceylon.
- Jathika Namal Uyana - Jathika Namal Uyana is located 7 km from the Madatugama junction on the Colombo-Anuradhapura highway in Sri Lanka. The Iron Wood forest is a unique forest in Sri Lanka where Iron Wood trees dominate the vegetation across 260 acres. Namal Uyana is situated in the Dry Zone area of Sri Lanka. In the Na tree forest, or Namal Uyana, the hot sunlight is shaded by the trees, providing a cool environment for the small medicinal plants beneath and offering visitors a refreshing experience, akin to being in the coolest place in Sri Lanka. According to biologists, Namal Uyana is significant for its 102 species of tropical plants, 82 of which are herbal, within the 260-acre garden and the surrounding forest. The park and its vicinity are also home to 18 bird species and various mammals, including elephants, leopards, monkeys, and deer.
