• Namhansanseong Fortress - Overview of Namhansanseong Fortress

Namhansanseong Provincial Park encompasses Namhansanseong Fortress, one of the four fortresses constructed to safeguard Hanyang (the former name of Seoul). Gaeseong, Suwon, Ganghwa, and Gwangju are positioned to the north, south, west, and east respectively. Namhansanseong Fortress is situated to the east in Gwangju. The park is located on Namhansan Mountain, 24 km southeast of Seoul and 6 km northeast of Seongnam. The trails extend for a total of approximately 12.4 km (main fortress 8.9 km, external fortress 3.2 km, Sinnamsanseong Fortress 0.2 km). The height is 7.3 m.

Namhansanseong’s circumference is about 12 km, constructed by layering small natural stones over larger ones. The fortress comprises Sueocheong (Defense Command), Gwana (government office), storage facilities, and a haenggung (temporary palace), along with 80 wells and 45 springs. Additionally, the administration was relocated from Gwangju to within the fortress, highlighting the significance of Namhansanseong Fortress.

Situated on a vast area of 990,000㎡ and in a naturally favorable geomantic location ‘facing water and backed by mountains’, the Korean Folk Village (KFV) is a representation of a village from the Joseon period, featuring authentic houses relocated from various provinces of the country. Reconstructed following extensive surveys of existing houses across the nation and verified by experts, it is an authentic village from the Joseon period that showcases seasonal transformations and everyday folk culture meticulously gathered.

The village was established with homes of commoners and aristocrats either relocated or restored from different regions of the country, including the south, middle, north, and islands. It depicts the authentic lifestyle of the Joseon era, featuring gwana (provincial government office), seowon and seodang (educational institutions), hanyakbang (medical institution), Buddhist temples, seonangdang (religious buildings), and a fortune-teller’s place.
