The Meridian4people site states, “full day excursion with guided tour of the historical and religious monuments..”, I am sure what this company believes a “guided tour” is but it is certainly NOT what we received. We received a driver to get us from point A to B to C and back, no guide, no tour. The young gentleman driver was pleasant enough, but had no notion of providing any sort of service beyond driving, which as he stated, I’m just a driver. Although we did hear quite a bit about how much he was paid and couldn’t afford things. We wanted to see Santiago de Compostela as it was a World Heritage Site and was highly recommended by family friends from Portugal. I don’t believe our expectations were too high, we wanted to hear some information about the Portuguese pilgrimage, what we were going to see, the importance of it, just some basic information. The driver did not or was not able to provide one single piece of information or historical facts. When we arrived we went directly to a restaurant for lunch. The company had not called ahead to ensure there was space … for the 3 of us … we waited about 5-10 minutes to be seated as the restaurant was full, which was fine in and of itself. The driver said he didn’t understand why his boss had not called ahead of time to ensure there was space set aside. Once we were seated the driver said he would help us understand the menu, but then couldn’t translate most of it to English and had to use our phone to look up the items as he didn’t have Internet connection in Spain. The restaurant servers could not or did not want to communicate with us in English. The food was OK, not really that good but not that bad either. After lunch we walked, in the blowing rain to the site. The driver pointed to us the direction where he said the entrance was and then left us to find it ourselves … and the directions were incorrect. We had to walk around the entire complex to try to find the entrance, only to walk in to a severe construction site. About 85% of the church was wrapped in plastic, with only the centre alter being visible, but with scaffolding all around it. It took us probably less than 10 minutes to walk around… and that was more cause we were in complete shock that we had come all this way. I tried to provide feedback to the driver as to the disappointment this “tour” offered. I mentioned that as a tour company that knows these sites and country better, they should have informed us of the significant construction this site was under allowing us to make the decision with facts as to whether or not we still wanted to see it. He said oh well I’m just a driver. We felt as though this tour was thrown together at the last minute, which I don’t understand considering we booked almost 3.5 months prior to the tour date, booked June.04 for Sept.23. I would assume they had no other people booking this tour so they just threw us a driver to get us there. This was NOT worth 110 EURO per person. We are just happy that the other 2 full day tours we booked in Porto were not with this company and instead with LivingTours which were fantastic, including amazing customer service. I am giving this company 1 star purely because they were the only tour company that stopped at Viana do Castelo which was beautiful to see.
