The square is also the starting point for the remarkable Corsa dei Ceri race, held almost annually since medieval times. Each May, teams from various neighborhoods (“famiglie di ceraioli”) compete to carry a massive, one-ton “candle” topped with a replica of a local saint to the Basilica high above the town, amidst the enthusiastic cheers of both locals and visitors.

Wonderful walking tour of Gubbio - Fantastic walking tour of the historic center of Gubbio. Simona set the stage with interesting history and walked us through the fascinating center of the city. She was so kind and interesting and even helped us buy tickets for the funicular and walked us to where we got on. We probably would not have been brave enough to do this by ourselves, but it was definitely a high point of our visit.
