-
Palace of the Grooves - Named for its distinctive architectural design featuring well-preserved grooves, this was the residence of Yikin Chaan K’awiil, the 27th ruler of Tikal’s dynasty and its wealthiest. Unlike his predecessors who resided at the Central Acropolis, Yikin Chaan K’awiil constructed the Palace of Grooves as a separate complex due to his wealth and resources. He also commissioned Temple IV and Temple VI. The palace, built around 750 A.D., features two floors and five courtyards.
-
Central Acropolis - This complex served as the royal family’s residential area in Tikal, featuring six courtyards, three of which have been restored. It likely hosted royal visitors from other Mesoamerican cities for diplomatic purposes. The palace within has five floors, and some original wooden lintels, placed by its builders 14 centuries ago, remain in good condition.
-
Temple I - We will explore this iconic monument, capturing photos from various angles. Officially named the Temple of the Great Jaguar due to a carved jaguar on its original wooden lintel, this carving is now housed in a renowned museum. In the 1960s, archaeologists discovered the greatest treasure beneath this temple: the burial of Hasaw Chaan K’awil, Tikal’s most famous king, adorned with 16.5 pounds of jade jewelry.
-
Great Plaza - Known for its vibrant energy, the Great Plaza is the most restored complex at this Mayan site, featuring multiple stelae, some depicting portraits of Tikal’s kings. Excavations were conducted in the 1960s by the University of Pennsylvania Museum.
-
North Acropolis - This complex served as a royal cemetery for Tikal’s kings and queens. It is likened to an onion due to its multiple architectural layers, some of which display masks of the rain and sun gods. The guide communicates effectively with all guests, accompanying them to climb the monuments and explaining key details. Ideal for photographers, the tour offers prime photo opportunities of Mayan structures.
-
Temple II, Tikal, Guatemala - We will ascend this temple to enjoy the best view of the Great Plaza, observing the masks carved atop the temple. This vantage point offers excellent photo opportunities of Temple I, North Acropolis, and the Great Plaza.
-
Temple V - This beautiful temple, with its rounded corners, is the only one facing north. Built around 650 A.D. and restored in 2002, Temple V is Tikal’s second tallest. Its unique architecture set it apart from other city temples. Discovered in 1848, its roof comb was never obscured by trees, making it visible from afar, particularly from the south where Tikal’s discoverers originated.
-
Plaza Of The Seven Temples - This plaza features seven temples in a row, three ball courts, and three palaces, totaling thirteen—a sacred number in Mayan culture. It appears to have been a venue for sports and aristocratic entertainment. It boasts the only triple ball court found in Mesoamerica.
-
Lost World - We will conclude our visit here, awaiting sunset from the top of the Great Pyramid. The wildlife sounds are captivating. The Lost World served as Tikal’s astronomical observatory, with the Great Pyramid as the focal point for observing stars, planets, and the sun. Three buildings on the east side mark the seasons. The lower plaza, part of the Lost World, features a central podium with Teotihuacan architecture, evidencing cultural interaction between these ancient cities.
-
Tikal National Park - The walking tour concludes at Gate 2 of Tikal National Park around 19:30 in June, when days are longest, or around 18:30 in December, when nights are longest. The activity ends with a drop-off at the original pick-up location, or another location if arranged in advance.
