Amazing Pacaya Volcano Excursion - David was an amazing tour guide. They picked us up from our hotel and drove us 1.5 hours from Guatemala city to the base of the volcano. We decided to ride horses up (and were happy we did). The climb is steep but the top is very beautiful. We had pizza cooked under the volcanic rock. There wasn’t any live lava at the time but there was still steam from the rock. Highly recommend. Great experience.

Super Fun and Scenic Hike (and Lava Pizza!) – Glad We Chose This One - I went on this trip with 2 other people and it was amazing. I know there are MANY hikes available but we absolutely loved this one.
For the TLDR readers; great hike, wonderful guide (ask for Gabriel!); took about 6.5-7hrs of our day (could be longer if you are slow) but we appreciated this; great pizza; beautiful volcano; private tour!
A few things: this trip is private so whoever you book with, you hike with! This was great as it was myself and another work colleague (mid 30s) and a student (22) on the trip.
They were on time picking up from the hotel and we took the ~1/1.5 hr trip to the base of which we would hike. It is a bit of a windy road once you get close to the volcano, but this makes sense as Guatemala has 37 volcanos so all roads need to go around them!
There were toilets there at the base. Then the hike begins and a horse does follow behind in case one person needs it to get up. My colleague did struggle to hike as the altitude made him lightheaded after walking for 10 minutes, so he opted to pay for the horse on the way up (280 quetzal ~$32). The way down is much easier (unless your knees are very very bad as there is looser rock on the way down). My colleague did not need a horse on the way down. Despite being in really good shape, I did find it a bit more tiring as we climbed due to the altitude--but it was very manageable. Take the breaks--which there are many beautiful stopping points and overlooks along the way.
At the top you can see Pacaya and the new petrified rock from the eruption in 2021 and on. Really neat. We took some pictures there then headed down. At the bottom you get up close with the volcanic rock and it is so cool. You feel like you are on another planet. Then you get to the place where the volcano steam (and a bit of coal) helps make pizza. It was delicious! We got 1 pizza for 3 people and it was plenty.
This is not an up and back loop but you start and finish at two different spots--you finish down the mountain some so your driver will be there to pick you up. There are bathrooms at the finish, too, before you head back to your hotel in Guatemala City.
Guat2go is a GREAT company and we learned there are 100 independent tour guides traversing the mountain. You will see many others along the way, but we did not feel crowded at all. Our tour guide, Gabriel, was absolutely wonderful and I highly recommend him. My colleagues and I agreed we were super lucky in that he was so knowledge, spoke very good English, and really managed the entire hike/trip so well.
All in all-- I am SO happy we booked this tour. It was such a fun, unique experience!

Amazing experience. The... - Amazing experience. The initial accent is difficult but they have horses available which made it much easier! The tour guide himself Walter was such an Amazon person full of knowledge and really connected with us. the pizza is small even for two people. Suggest you talk with the organizers before hand for a larger one

Such an Awesome Experience!! - This was a great tour! Cesar was awesome - great English & a really fun tour guide! We climbed the volcano with horses, ate pizza on the volcano from the “Pizza Man”, & then drank some fresh brewed coffee from the “Coffee Queen” when we got back down! Great tour! Thanks Cesar!

Great morning hike! - David was great. He was prepared for everything and was very knowledgeable about Pacaya and the surrounding area. It was a great morning activity and the hike made the pizza extra delicious.

Hiking - My husband and I did the private tour with David. We had so much fun. This is perfect for people that want to do a hike that is not too difficult. It's not easy but it's not super hard.

A fantastic experience - I went on a solo adventure to Pacaya in November 2024. Roundtrip transportation from my Airbnb in Guatemala City was included. We left promptly in the AM and enjoined a smooth ride to Pacaya where I met Walter, the perfect guide.
Because I read other reviews, I figured adding on a horse to get to the top was the best route. I’m glad I did. You can still enjoy the views without testing your endurance at a high altitude.
Throughout, Walter was kind and joyful, often recommending the best spots of photographs, sharing history, and making conversation. He made sure I was comfortable and safe every step of the way, which is extra important to me as a solo traveler.
The pizza at be top was delicious and there is a cute jewelry store where you can buy items and trinkets made with lava.
Truly a 10/10 experience, and one of my favorite travel adventures to date.
Special shootout to Walter, Guapo (the horse), and Marisol for making my day extra fun!

Guat2do Travel Experiences - First off, this was an amazing adventure I read the description and saw a few photos before booking the activity. Well done this was very organized, the views were breathtaking and s/o to tour guide Mynor. He was very professional, knowledgeable about the landscape and provided insight through out time together about the culture. I really recommend if he is available to request him you won’t be disappointed.
The elevation on the hike up the mountain was intense after awhile so he recommended taking a taxi (horse) which proved to be beneficial for parts of the steepest but once you make it to your destination overlooking the city with the beautiful clouds in the background.
Also have S/o Guat2do they were helpful keeping me up to date on timely changes with the weather and pickup/drop off. There was not anytime that I felt unsafe and the staff all did not great job pointing out some of the things unique to the city.
I wasn’t about to check out the cooked pizza on the volcano due to the rain but it wasn’t so bad bc the steamed marshmallows. I was even given a partial refund due to the weather thank you for honoring that agreement.
I am looking forward to my next visit to watch the lava flow at night and I’ll likely book again with Guat2do Travel.

Different and Worthwhile - Driver was phenomenal even in crazy traffic. Tour guide was extremely knowledgeable as well. We rode horses up a volcano and hiked a bit. Once we got to the top, it was certainly a bucket list experience. Having pizza from a lava rock is cool

Great people + the best pizza - The conductor of the shuttle, Mario, was so sweet and efficient in getting us through the Guatemala City traffic to the base of the volcano. Our guide was informative and patient with our pace. I got to ride on a horse named “Muñeco” up the volcano which was so much fun! The Pacaya Pizza made by David was probably the best pizza I’ve ever had. 10/10 experience.
