Great way to learn about the landscape - Susana, her partner Antonio, and Antonio’s niece from Juarez picked me up on time at El Pípila, and Susana drove us safely to Santa Rosa de Lima, narrating a bit along the way regarding tunnels, hacienda remains, and sections of the Camino Real which we passed. We stopped and bought atole. Early in the hike, we passed a small store where a guy was working outside on a large steaming kettle of ate over a small fire. Ate is a reduced fruit candy, in this case made from a local fruit called tejocote. I’m an independent traveler who can manage a purchase of atole or ate, but I might not have stopped for the ate and really appreciated their explanation of what we were trying (particularly for the ate). Susana and I traded mostly common names in Spanish and English for various birds, plants, and mammals (although we didn’t see any mammals). They explained the small scale charcoal production which occurs in the area, and explained the land ownership and that hiking on private land is generally legal in Mexico without permission. We completed a loop of about five miles to the Perlilla reservoir and back to Santa Rosa, getting great views of oak forests, canyons, and lower foothills at a few places. I got a good sense of the landscape and learned a lot during the 5 hours of the tour. I would do this again if given the opportunity. We spoke Spanish almost entirely, which I am an early intermediate speaker of, but I still learned a lot. If you are a Spanish speaker, I’m sure you will enjoy the tour even more.

Do Not Pass By This Opportunity! - I can't use enough superlatives to describe my experience with Susana on a solo hike to the Sierra Santa Rosa. From start to finish, Susana was sharing with me her great knowledge about the region, the Sierra, the flora and fauna, the history, and anything else that came up. Her English is perfect, though I chose to speak Spanish with her. The pueblo de Santa Rosa is beautiful and charming, and even the drive there and back felt like part of the adventure. The hike was not difficult but varied, and we enjoyed sitting on the rocks at the top with snacks, enjoying the spectacular view. Beyond her knowledge and professionalism, however, Susana is a kind, interesting, and overall amazing person with whom it is an honor and delight to get to spend time. At our meeting point in Guanajuato another American woman who was going to ride in the car with us to do a bike tour with another guide got locked out of her airbnb. Both guides went above and beyond to help her get in contact with her airbnb host. Then, after our tour was over, and Susana texted me a link to a place she had recommended, I let her know I had gotten locked into my airbnb room, and she offered to send over a friend to help me and continued to check in on me after it was resolved. This was definitely one of the high points of my time in Guanajuato, and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get out of the city and have a different experience in the Sierra.

Superb Nature Tour - I highly recommend "Hiking with Antonio" as a way to see some of the countryside outside of Guanajuato City. Antonia is fluent in Spanish and English. His career was spent in the local silver mining business. He's an excellent driver on the curvy roads :-) And, he's a superb guide on the hiking trails. He both offered information, and was glad to answer any questions, I posed about the area's history, culture, customs, flora and fauna. You won't regret spending part of a day with Antonio to explore outside of the city!!

Visiting Guanajuato and the Area - Antonio was terrific. Super knowledgeable and always willing to answer questions. And Susana is an excellent resource for all things tourist related in Guanajuato and the region. I highly recommend them.

Terrific Hiking in the Mountains around Guanajuato - I did both hikes and they were equally terrific. Susana and Antonio are so knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the area. As well Antonio gave me a great overview of the mining history that fueled the wealth of Guanajuato for many years. Highly recommended if you're looking for exercise and great information about this beautiful part of Mexico.

Gorgeous views of Guanajuato - Antonio picked my dad and I up from our hotel and drove us through the fantastic tunnel network running through the city. He was a font of knowledge about Guanajuato, so that even before we had reached the Bufa hills we had learned a great deal. Our guide was very patient and conversational with us, telling us a great deal about the city's mining history, mummies, local plants and animals and sports teams, mesoamerican history and geological undergirdings, all while the area's scenery opened up as we ascended. This is a strenuous hike so good shoes and a walking stick are advised, especially for those worried about their knees.

Excellent option to get to know Guanajuato from another perspective - The walk was incredible, it was through a protected natural area, you can't imagine that there is such a beautiful and well-kept place just a few minutes from Guanajuato, our guide Susana is super friendly and explains everything very well, plus she was very punctual and He gave us excellent food and drink recommendations, it was definitely a great experience highly recommended.

beautiful hike - great guides - I have done the La Bufa hike twice with Cacomixtle – once with Antonio and most recently with Susana. This is a great hike of easy-to-moderate difficulty that I would highly recommend for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, and Susana and her team are great guides to show you the way and provide whatever background on the area, or Guanajuato generally, that you want. The “reward” at the end of the hike – a beautiful panoramic view of Guanajuato – is very special. Cacomixtle does such a great job tailoring the tour to whatever may interest you.
