Great - It was a great time. They were funny and entertaining. We had a great time! It was a great way to walk the alleys of Guanajuato and learn some history too plus sing along to traditional songs.

Great way to see Guanajuato at night - The Callejoneadas are offered by many different groups, each with their own personality. We had a great time with the guys we followed, but it was in Spanish. If you don’t speak Spanish you can still have a great time, but you’ll miss a lot of the jokes and the stories.
They will try and sell you extras, like flowers and drinks. I get it. Not a big deal. And yrs, I did buy the overpriced flowers for my wife. It is part of making the most of the experience.
You will be walking up and down stairs in dark alleys with a bunch of other people.
The “Estudiantil” is not students, it’s just a name.

Happily clueless - It did say that it was all in Spanish but not speaking the language took away from the activity because they were telling funny stories and we were”lost”. The music however was great. A big negative was they pressured my husband to buy flowers (which I can’t keep because of traveling) and me to buy my husband a pin. They said we would have bad luck for our relationship if we didn’t. A fellow participant translated that to us.

Disappointing with Offensive Humor - We attended the 9:15 p.m. callejoneada on June 26, 2026, expecting a beautiful, cultural, and enjoyable experience. Instead, for $100 per person, we were led into a crowd of what felt like around people, making it nearly impossible to keep up with the band or fully enjoy the tour.
What left the biggest impression, however, was the constant use of misogynistic and homophobic humor. The guitarist repeatedly used exaggerated effeminate impersonations as if being feminine were something to be mocked. One of the few stories the main performer told also relied on a homophobic joke. It felt unnecessary, outdated, and disappointing.
Rather than feeling like a celebration of Guanajuato’s culture, the experience felt more like a 1990s Mexican comedy TV show built around stereotypes. My family and I left with a bitter taste in our mouths, and we cannot recommend it.

Not as planned - The “virreynal student estudiantina” never showed up. Apparently they only work on weekends and Viator does not know about it. Luckily the “Estudiantina Compostelana” honored the vouchers we had, and we could enjoy the callejoneada. I will not buy the tickets on line is there is a next time. They are much cheaper at the gathering place for all the estudiantinas..

Very unpleasant experience, not recommended if you go with children - Book a Saturday 7:45 pm because they offered on their website a family, cultural experience that included music and legends. The reality was that it is more oriented to bluster and alcohol, which the guide did not stop making vulgar and even misogynistic jokes. You'll be separated from the women at one point (I don't know why) and the jokes get heavier still without considering that there are children in the group. They have no knowledge of the history of each alley and tell no legends. A real disappointment, not recommended.

Very vulgar, obscene and drunk musicians - Very obscene and vulgar jokes and public speaking, not suitable for families, shame that nevertheless speak incoherence and half still promote alcoholizing selling drinks along the way and they also drink which means that the guide is drunk, which pity that they Sing and play so beautiful but ruin it first, for making money selling alcohol. Secondly, for speaking of such vulgarity and obscenity. Third, because drunks are the ones who guide and don't stop even though there are kids present, and in the end even though they cash tickets and sell alcohol and other things ask you for more tips, they really go overboard,

Poor experience - The “Virreynal Estudiantina” never shower up. According to other estudiantinas they operate mainly on weekends. I do not know if Viator knows about it, but they sold us tickets for 9/24/2024, which was a Tuesday. Luckily another estudiantina honored the tickets we had and we managed to live the “Callejoneada” experience, which was good. The tickets of the estudiantina we used have a lower cost than the one we contracted, therefore, we will be asking Viator for a cost adjustment in the near future.
