• McKittrick Canyon - McKittrick Canyon is one of the park’s top attractions. This canyon is like a hidden gem within the arid Chihuahuan Desert, with steep walls that protect a diverse array of plants, animals, and waterways.
• Frijole Ranch Museum - The museum operates seasonally based on staff availability and narrates the history of human habitation in this spring-fed desert oasis, from Native peoples to the Smith family. The grounds are open year-round and offer picnic tables under shady trees.
• McKittrick Creek - This stone cabin is a 5-mile round trip from the Visitor Center trailhead and is a moderately challenging hike. Most people complete it in about two hours.
• Frijole Ranch - This is an excellent place to stroll and explore. Visitors typically spend about an hour visiting the house and orchard.
• Frijole Ranch Trailhead - This is also the starting point for the popular Smith Spring Loop Trail. This trail takes about an hour and offers an easy loop of just over two miles.
• Frijole Ranch Museum - The historic Frijole Ranch house is open for visitors! Now a museum, it showcases what ranching life was like back in the 1800s.
• Pinery Butterfield Stage Station Ruins - Part of the 2,800-mile route established for the Butterfield Stagecoach Route in 1858 to transport mail cross-country. Stagecoaches made the arduous journey from San Francisco to St. Louis every two weeks to deliver mail across the rapidly expanding West.
• Pine Springs Trailhead - Pine Springs Trail is a major north-south trail route through the park, connecting to various other trails along the way. The main route leads back to McKittrick Canyon and is a challenging hike that takes 12 hours and covers nearly 19 miles of rocky, steep terrain.
• Guadalupe Peak - Guadalupe Peak is the highest natural point in Texas, with an elevation of 8,751 feet.
• El Capitan Viewpoint - Alongside Guadalupe Peak, El Capitan is one of the most renowned peaks in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. It is the tenth-highest peak in Texas, but it is more famous for the hidden treasure found inside - a fossilized reef.
• Salt Basin Dunes - The Salt Basin dunes offer another insight into the desert’s ancient past.

As we drive, you can see the rugged peaks of El Capitan and Guadalupe Peak rising above the flat, whitish terrain. We are entering the Salt Basin, a relatively new addition to the complex geology of Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
