Göreme panoramic viewpoint captivates visitors eager to admire Cappadocia’s beauty, especially during sunrise and sunset. The most convenient way to appreciate the stunning Cappadocia valleys, the unique fairy chimneys, and the colorful balloons in the sky is by visiting Göreme’s panoramic viewpoint. This spot, offering an unforgettable view, is often bustling with visitors. It is a lively place where tourists from various countries gather, creating a warm atmosphere for meetings and conversations. Visitors to Cappadocia are highly encouraged not to miss the Göreme Panoramic Viewpoint!
- Uchisar Castle - Uchisar Castle stands as the highest point in Cappadocia, featuring a unique structure that served as a natural fortress. Initially admired for its fairy chimney shape, the castle was later used as an early warning system against attacks from higher ground during the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods.
- Kaymakli Underground City - The caves may have first been constructed in the soft volcanic rock by the Phrygians, an Indo-European people, in the 8th–7th centuries BC. The city was significantly expanded and deepened during the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) era, serving as protection from Muslim Arab raids during the Arab–Byzantine wars (780–1180). Some artifacts found in these underground settlements date back to the Middle Byzantine Period, between the 5th and 10th centuries AD. These cities continued to be used by Christian inhabitants as protection from the Mongolian incursions of Timur in the 14th century.
After the region was conquered by the Seljuk Turks of Persia, the cities served as refuges (Greek: καταφύγια, romanized: kataphúgia) from the Turkish Muslim rulers. As late as the 20th century, the inhabitants, referred to as Rûm (‘Eastern Romans’) by their Ottoman Turkish rulers, still used the underground cities to escape periodic waves of Ottoman persecution.
- Pigeon Valley - Pigeon Valley dates back to the Hittite Empire, when it was used as a pigeon farm by local villagers who carved homes into the canyon walls. The pigeons were utilized for food and to produce fertilizer for farmland, playing a crucial role in the community’s economy. Today, many of these pigeon coops are abandoned, but they remain visible on the valley walls, serving as a reminder of its history.
- Göreme Tarihi Milli Parki - In the 4th century, small anchorite communities began forming in the region, following the guidance of Saint Basil of Caesarea. They carved cells into the soft rock. During the iconoclastic period (725–842), the decoration of many sanctuaries in the region was minimal, usually featuring symbols like the Christian cross. After this period, new churches were carved into the rocks and richly adorned with colorful frescoes.
- Fairy Chimneys - Paşabağ Valley is home to several ancient cave churches and chapels, carved into the rock. These structures were built between the 4th and 13th centuries by Christian monks during the Byzantine period. They are considered some of the oldest and best-preserved examples of rock-cut architecture in Cappadocia. Some of these churches and chapels feature elaborate frescoes depicting biblical scenes, enhancing their historical importance.
Paşabağ Valley is a remarkable place filled with natural beauty and historical significance. Its fairy chimneys are among the most impressive in all of Cappadocia, while its ancient monasteries offer a glimpse into a past era when Christianity flourished in this region. For tourists and travelers, this is a destination not to be missed!
- Avanos - Pottery is a craft found worldwide, with each culture developing its own style. However, the variations between countries, regions, and even groups of people are fascinating. Pottery enthusiasts visiting Cappadocia should explore the town of Avanos, located about 8km from Göreme. It is regarded as the center of clay pottery in Turkey. The river flowing through Avanos is called Kizilirmak, meaning Red River. Since the Hittite period (as far back as 2000 BCE), locals have utilized the red clay from the riverbanks.
