Poinsett accomplished numerous feats that will be discussed during the tour, but his most significant contribution to Greenville was serving as an early promoter. More of his achievements will be shared on your tour.
- Connolly’s Irish Pub - Connolly’s Irish Pub is both a historical landmark and a popular bar in modern Greenville. It has a unique history, with rumors suggesting it was a brothel in the early 1900s and later a pharmacy. The mural on the side provides additional context for your tour, offering a glimpse of Greenville in the early 1900s.
- American Cigar Factory - The former American Cigar Factory is quite beautiful from the outside, which is how you’ll view it. It is primarily used as office space now, and no longer produces the vast quantities of cigars it once did. Nevertheless, it remains an important part of Greenville’s history, as workers reportedly produced around 1 million cigars a month. It provided a strong livelihood for both men and women in Greenville during the 1900s, although many reports indicate that the weavers were predominantly female.
- Coffee Underground - Coffee Underground is the most popular coffee spot in Greenville, SC. It also offers a fascinating view of the historic tunnels beneath Greenville. To this day, there are numerous sealed tunnels under the city, used during the bootlegging era. This café is open almost all day, allowing you to explore its history.
- North Brown Street - Brown Street was central to early music history, including the roots of jazz. It also features several delightful restaurants, including a piano bar.
- Max Heller statue - Max Heller was a former mayor and a champion of both desegregation and the revitalization of Greenville. He is celebrated for bringing vibrancy and unity to the city. More of his story will be revealed during the tour.
- Blu Lounge & Club - Blu Lounge and Club was originally the Blue Martini, a renowned club and speakeasy in the early 1900s. We’ll view the exterior, discuss its historical significance, and perhaps even hear about the ghosts that are said to haunt it.
- North Main Street & West College Street - This section is dedicated to the war monuments and memorials located here. It includes tributes to groups from the Civil War to World War II. While this aspect of history may be challenging, it is important to many who appreciate a tour like this.
