This site features a collection of massive dark sandstone rocks towering over Kalampaka, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. With an average altitude of 313 meters, its geological formation has intrigued geologists, though it remains unexplained. Interestingly, it is not mentioned in Greek Mythology or by ancient historians. This rugged and remote landscape provided a haven for Christian hermits, as noted by Byzantinologists of the eleventh century.
• Great Meteoron Monastery - The Monastery of Great Meteoron is an Eastern Orthodox monastery within the Meteora complex in Thessaly, central Greece. It is located atop a rock known as Meteora or Platylithos, standing 415 meters above the Pineios valley floor. Founded by Athanasius the Meteorite in the 14th century, it is a significant historical site.
• Monastery of Varlaam - The Monastery of St. Varlaam is an Eastern Orthodox monastery that is part of the Meteora complex in Thessaly, central Greece. It is perched on a rocky precipice 373 meters above the valley floor. The Dragon Cave lies to the south, beneath the monastery, and to the east, the ruins of Kelarakia Rock are visible today. The Cell of St. Paul the Apostle is likely associated with Kelarakia.
• Agios Stefanos - The monastery of Agios Stefanos, also known as St. Stephen, is the most accessible of all the Meteora monasteries. Visitors can easily reach its entrance by crossing a small bridge, making it an ideal destination for those with mobility challenges.

We’ll also be exploring Kalambaka, the city that presides over the entrance to the Meteora. Despite not being particularly alluring on its own, the town is situated right opposite some magnificent rock outcrops, bestowing it with a spectacular backdrop.
