Journeying through the Thessaly Plain, we encounter the Meteora monasteries. These structures offer us a glance into the age-old monastic traditions of the Orthodox Church, stationed in one of the most breathtaking locales in Greece. The tops of these sandstone pillars served as the fortification and seclusion they sought. In bygone times, these monasteries could often only be accessed through a rope ladder, which could be pulled up when under threat, thereby offering protection against the Turkish invaders overtaking the Byzantine Empire. Our journey will also lead us to the battle site of Leonidas’ 300 Spartans against the powerful forces of Xerxes of Persia - Thermopylae or the “Hot Gates”. The Spartans, along with their allies, enticed the Persian troops to this narrow passage between the cliffs and the sea. Despite their defeat, their courageous stand facilitated the mobilization of the other Greek city-states, leading to the final defeat of the Persians at the Battle of Salamis.
