- Mouse Island - This iconic symbol of Corfu is one of its most renowned landscapes, often celebrated in song lyrics! Known as Pontikonisi, this small island is located at the entrance of the ancient Ellaiko port, now the site of the Chalikiopoulos Lagoon.
Pontikonisi is a lush area, abundant with tall cypress trees and other uniquely beautiful plants. As a result, it is considered a natural monument, and visitors are only permitted to disembark briefly and under strict supervision by guards.
The name Pontikonisi comes from its shape, as viewed from above, it resembles a mouse! According to legend, Pontikonisi was Odysseus’s ship, turned into a rock by Poseidon, who was angry with the clever king of Ithaca, to prevent his return home.
- Kanoni - Kanoni is one of Corfu’s most picturesque districts, situated on the outskirts of the modern city, on the southern peninsula of the Assumption hill, where the archaeological site of Palaiopoli is found. The name Kanoni dates back to the French Occupation of Corfu, when generals in 1798 decided to place significant fortifications and a battery there. The French cannon (Kanoni) remains in this location and can be viewed up close.
Just below Kanoni, the Chalikiopoulos Lagoon offers one of Corfu’s most iconic views: Pontikonisi and Panagia Vlahernon. The small, tiled-roof chapel connected to the land by a narrow cement strip and the lush, emblematic islet at the bay’s entrance is one of Corfu’s most photographed sights. The best way to enjoy them from above is to view them from Kanoni.
- Mon Repos Palace - Located within the archaeological site of Palaiopoli in Corfu, the verdant estate of Mon Repos is approximately 3 kilometers from the city of Corfu, covering a total of 258 acres of vegetation on the hill of Analipsi. It also includes an impressive palace with a breathtaking sea view.
The Mon Repos palace was constructed by Frederick Adam, an English Commissioner of the Ionian Islands, in 1831. It is said to have been a gift to his beloved wife, the Corfiot Nina Palantianou, with the building’s architect also being English, Whitmore. The palace features large openings, a colonial style with strong Greek and neoclassical elements.
Mon Repos hosted Empress Elizabeth of Austria before she built the Achillion, and it is the birthplace of Prince Philip, who later married Elizabeth of England.
