For 700 years, the Tower of London has closed its gates nightly in the Ceremony of the Keys. Tickets for this event are highly coveted and sell out quickly, making it one of London’s most exclusive experiences, with this tour being the only way to gain access after hours.
Once the daytime visitors have departed, a small group is guided into the fortress by a resident Beefeater, one of the few inhabitants of the Tower. By the light of lanterns, the group passes by Traitors’ Gate, the White Tower, and the Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula, while listening to tales spanning nine centuries of royal authority, imprisonment, and intrigue.
The evening culminates in the Ceremony of the Keys itself. Participants stand close to the Chief Yeoman Warder as he challenges the sentry, and the bugler plays the Last Post over the deserted grounds. There are no crowds or cameras during the ceremony, preserving the ritual as it has been conducted since the 14th century.
