- Puck’s Glen - From Hunters Quay ferry port, it’s a short 15-minute drive to Puck’s Glen. Enjoy a 45-minute hike through the enchanting landscape.
The glen is named after Puck, a playful spirit from many legends and featured in William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Keep an eye out for the Poca Ban, Argyll’s version of Puck, a spirit that appears as a rolling ball of wool, causing mischief. In the 1870s, James Duncan, laird of Benmore, invested significantly to enhance the gorge, creating a wild, mystical realm to captivate his guests. The glen’s cool, consistently damp environment is perfect for lush mosses and ferns.
- Inveraray Castle - A 50-minute drive takes you to the magnificent Inveraray Castle, the Clan Campbell seat. Your guide will share the story of the Campbells, who rose from a small 13th-century clan to become Scotland’s most powerful.
The Castle is home to the Duke of Argyll, a title granted to the Chiefs of Clan Campbell by William of Orange in 1701. The foundation stone was laid in 1745, replacing a 15th-century castle.
Explore the Castle and its beautiful gardens on an optional self-guided tour.
Castle admission £16.50
Gardens only ticket £9
Please note, Inveraray Castle is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so interior visits are not possible. However, you can still visit Inveraray town and capture exterior photos of the castle.
- Inveraray - Before or after the Castle visit, enjoy time in the charming town of Inveraray, with a population of 570. Built from scratch in 1770, explore the small Main Street, browse local stores for fine whiskies or local produce, or visit the Old Inveraray Jail, built in 1820.
Discuss lunch options with your guide, either in Inveraray or at the renowned Loch Fyne Oyster Bar. (Booking recommended as it can be busy)
It’s advisable to book lunch before the tour, or if you prefer a flexible lunch to maximize attraction time, inform the guide in the morning.
- Rest and be Thankful - Departing Inveraray, head towards Loch Lomond, stopping at the top of Glen Croe for a fantastic photo opportunity at the Rest and Be Thankful viewpoint. (Approx 45-minute drive)
- Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park - Travel along the “bonnie bonnie banks” of Loch Lomond to the village of Luss. Your guide will share stories about the local Clans and the Loch, considered the most beautiful in Scotland, inspiring many songs. (Approx 30-minute drive)
- Luss - The final stop is the picturesque conservation village of Luss, located on the banks of Loch Lomond. Enjoy time to explore the village, stroll to the Loch, and admire the stunning views. Your guide will tell you about Luss Parish Church, built on an ancient cemetery dating back to the 7th century, featuring a Viking Hogback gravestone from the 11th century. This is the last stop, so if you need supplies before returning to the ship, inform your guide who can find a shop on the way back.
- Peel Ports Greenock Ocean Terminal - The tour concludes with a drive from Luss back to your ship. This journey takes approximately 1 hour, with potential additional stops if time allows, passing through the historic town of Dumbarton, where your guide will point out Dumbarton Castle. William Wallace was betrayed in 1305 by Sir John Menteith, who imprisoned Wallace at Dumbarton Castle before handing him over to the English.
