- Gorkha Museum - Many visitors to Nepal are unfamiliar with the name “Gorkha.” Historically, Nepal was known as “Gorkhana,” a name that dates back to the 1760s when King Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha unified the nation. His conquests established a common language and fostered a unified culture.
Gorkha City was the starting point of his journey. Perched on a high hill, the king’s castle/fortress provided a panoramic view of the lush green valley below. To the north, the majestic snow-capped Himalayas can be seen, with Mt. Manaslu, the world’s 8th highest peak, as its crown jewel. Visitors have the opportunity to explore the Gorkha Museum, which showcases ancient metals, coins, weapons, and the history of Gorkha’s royal families.
- Gorakha Nath Temple Gorkha - As the morning sun rises over Gorkha, the city stands proudly on a high hill, overlooking the rivers and fields below, like a sentinel guarding its domain. In ancient times, its kings were formidable figures. From their lineage emerged a great king in the 1700s who unified Nepal, preventing it from becoming a British colony.
Gorkha was the capital of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, a warrior king who, with his sword, united the numerous small kingdoms scattered across Nepal in the mid-1700s. The king possessed vision, courage, and leadership skills to assert his dominance over a determined people.
The city of Gorkha is strategically built on a high hill, offering commanding views in all directions. At its peak is Gorkha Durbar, the king’s grand fortress, where he could survey his surroundings each morning. To the north lie the snow-covered Himalayas, with Mt. Manaslu, “spirit mountain,” revered by Tibetans as a deity, rising to 8,163 meters (26,781 ft.). To the west and south are fertile valleys nourished by swift mountain rivers.
The Gorkha Historical Tour invites visitors to explore the fortress, palace, and sacred sites that are the pride of the people. Marvel at the construction of such a fortress on steep terrain. In the city below, stroll along the flagstone streets and visit the national museum, which chronicles the remarkable history of Nepal’s greatest king, whose family ruled until 2008.
The 2015 earthquake impacted Gorkha Durbar, and reconstruction efforts are ongoing.
