The cave’s tunnel extends approximately 2 km from east to west beneath the limestone hills known as Gunung Tempurung and Gunung Gajah. Comprising five large domes, it is believed to have formed around 8,000 B.C., roughly 10,000 years ago.
These domes feature ceilings that resemble coconut shells, each with unique calcium formations and marble, varying in temperature and water levels. The caves are renowned for their stunning gallery of stalagmites, stalactites, and other remarkable rock formations, which are exceptional speleological wonders unique to this region.

Its period of prosperity began around 1880 and continued into the 1930s, driven largely by tin mining, earning it the nickname “the town that tin built.” The tin rush attracted many migrants, primarily Chinese, many of whom amassed significant wealth.
