- Rest and Be Thankful - Departing from Glasgow, the journey will take just over an hour towards Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, crossing the River Clyde via the Erskine Bridge. Passing through Dumbarton, the guide will highlight Dumbarton Castle perched on Dumbarton Rock, where William Wallace was held after being betrayed by John Menteith. Upon reaching Loch Lomond, the guide will share insights about Scotland’s renowned Munro Mountains and point out Ben Lomond, the southernmost Munro.
Traveling along Loch Long and through Glen Coe, the first stop will be at the Rest and Be Thankful, named by soldiers who constructed the original military road in 1753. This spot offers stunning views back down the Glen.
- Inveraray Castle - A brief 30-minute drive from the Rest and Be Thankful leads to the town of Inveraray, where the impressive Inveraray Castle, the Clan seat of the Campbells, awaits. The guide will narrate the history of the Castle and the rise of the Campbells from a small 13th-century clan to Scotland’s most powerful. The Castle is the residence of the Duke of Argyll, a title granted to the Chiefs of Clan Campbell by William of Orange in 1701. The Castle’s foundation stone was laid in 1745, replacing a previous 15th-century structure.
Visitors can explore the Castle’s interior and its beautiful gardens or wander around the town, enjoying its charming streets and scenic waterfront views.
Please note, Inveraray Castle is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so interior visits are not possible on these days. However, the town of Inveraray will still be visited, allowing for exterior photos of the Castle.
-
Kilchurn Castle - Another 30-minute drive leads to Loch Awe, Scotland’s longest freshwater loch, where Kilchurn Castle, the original Campbell seat of power, is located. Built in 1450, it was severely damaged by lightning in 1760 and abandoned in favor of the new Castle in Inveraray. This will be a 10-minute stop at the viewpoint along the A819 road.
-
St Conan’s Kirk - Just a short 5-minute drive away, St Conan’s Kirk is an impressive church voted among the top 10 buildings in Scotland over the last 100 years by the Royal Incorporation of Architects Scotland in 2016. Built between 1881 and significantly extended in 1914, it is a favorite stop.
Constructed by Walter Douglas Campbell for his mother Agnes, it is a must-see on the tour.
Admission is by optional donation.
- Oban - Departing from St Conan’s Kirk, a 30-minute drive passes through the Pass of Brander and onto Loch Etive. If the tide is favorable, the impressive Falls of Lora, a waterfall phenomenon at the Loch’s entrance, can be seen.
Upon arrival in Oban, there will be time to explore the town. Visitors can choose to visit the Oban whisky distillery for a dram, enjoy seafood at the famous green shack, or hike up to McCaig’s Tower. Alternatively, a drive to the top can be arranged.
-
Castle Stalker - Leaving Oban, a 40-minute drive leads to another Castle photo opportunity at Castle Stalker, perfectly situated on an island in Loch Laich. It was featured in the Monty Python Holy Grail TV series and the movie Highlander End Game.
-
Glencoe - Departing Castle Stalker, a 30-minute drive brings visitors to the Glencoe area. Various stops will be made to admire the Three Sisters of Glencoe, Buchaille Etive Mor, the most photographed mountain in Scotland, and more, time permitting. Wildlife sightings, such as Red Stags, may also occur.
-
Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park - Before concluding the tour, a final stop will be made at Loch Lomond, a 1 hour and 15-minute drive away. Visitors may wish to explore the beautiful conservation village of Luss, located on the banks of Loch Lomond. There will be time to enjoy the small village, wander down to the Loch, and take in some of the area’s best views. The guide will share information about Luss Parish Church, built on the grounds of an ancient cemetery dating back to the 7th century, featuring a Viking Hogback gravestone from the 11th century. The village was also the setting for the local TV series “Take the High Road.” The Grade B listed cottages, which add character to the village, were remnants from local slate quarry workers. Depending on time, a 30-minute visit may be possible. (The drive back to Glasgow is approximately 1 hour.)
