- Glasgow Cathedral - Among Glasgow’s most remarkable landmarks, the Cathedral is truly breathtaking. It stands on the original site where St. Mungo established his first church in 614 A.D., showcasing the city’s incredibly ancient history.
Interestingly, while many assume Edinburgh is older, St. Margaret’s Cathedral in Edinburgh is actually newer than the current Glasgow Cathedral, which was constructed in the 12th Century.
- High Street - During your tour, you’ll also encounter remnants of Medieval Glasgow. As you stroll along High Street, one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares, you can admire the historic buildings and perhaps glimpse the renowned Tollbooth Steeple, where witches, thieves, and murderers were once executed.
- George Square - Located in the heart of Glasgow, George Square is a must-see. The square is adorned with numerous statues of notable Scottish politicians, literary figures, military leaders, and royalty.
The Glasgow City Chambers is perhaps the most striking feature of George Square. On weekdays, visitors can enter and admire the three-story marble staircase, which is said to rival The Vatican’s two-story staircase.
The architecture surrounding the square bears a resemblance to American styles, which is why it has been featured in major Hollywood films like Fast & Furious and World War Z.
- Finnieston Crane - As you venture out of the city center, you’ll notice the Finnieston Crane dramatically silhouetted against the River Clyde. It symbolizes the Scottish shipbuilding industry, although it was never used for ship construction. Instead, it was employed to lift massive items onto ships, such as locomotives and steam trains.
In the Finnieston area, you can experience ‘Modern Glasgow’ with the SECC and The Hydro, a hub for music and arts.
- Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum - Established in 1901, Kelvingrove Art Gallery is not only an architectural marvel but also a treasure trove of information and history. Visitors can explore Glasgow’s captivating history, from its inception to its Merchant history, the Industrial Revolution, and the rise of communism known as ‘Red Clyde’.
The museum also features the famous ‘floating heads’, a real-life spitfire, an Egyptian exhibit, an extensive art gallery, and even a live organ recital if you visit at the right time.
- Glasgow West End - A drive through the West End offers a fantastic opportunity to see all the sights. This affluent area boasts many beautiful buildings and intriguing stories. Your guide will highlight landmarks such as the ancient, gothic-style University of Glasgow, founded in 1451.
The University is the fourth-oldest in the English-speaking world!
- People’s Palace and Winter Gardens - Capture a photo by the Doulton Fountain with the stunning backdrop of the People’s Palace or Glasgow Green Park.
This Victorian structure was the largest Terracotta fountain ever built globally at the time, and atop it stands a statue of Queen Victoria proudly overlooking Glasgow Green.
Visitors can also explore the People’s Palace to learn more about Glasgow’s history. The museum showcases a wide array of artifacts, pictures, prints, and films depicting life in Glasgow through the ages.
Please note: The People’s Palace is currently closed for an exciting refurbishment project and is scheduled to reopen in 2027. Therefore, visiting the interior is not possible at this time.
- Merchant City - The Merchant City is one of Glasgow’s oldest districts, rich with stunning architecture. Each street is named after a prominent merchant who amassed wealth trading in the Indies during the late 1700s and early 1800s.
Today, it is a vibrant area filled with eateries and shops, making it an excellent place to wander and explore.
