ITINERARY FOR THE WEEKEND OF MAY 24 - MAY 25, 2025

Cultural Heritage and Whisky Tasting: A Weekend in Glasgow’s Historic Heart

Explore Glasgow’s rich cultural heritage and whisky traditions this weekend, with a mix of historical insights and immersive experiences. Discover the city’s industrial past, enjoy scenic whisky tours, and craft your own unique blend, all while navigating the dynamic weather conditions.

Discovering Glasgow’s Cultural Heritage

Glasgow, a city steeped in history and culture, offers a unique blend of ancient traditions and modern experiences. As you wander through its streets, you’ll find yourself surrounded by stunning architecture, vibrant art scenes, and a rich tapestry of stories waiting to be uncovered. This weekend, immerse yourself in Glasgow’s cultural heritage and explore the city’s fascinating past.

Begin your journey at the Riverside Museum of Transport and Travel, located at the junction of the Rivers Kelvin and Clyde. This museum, the first purpose-built museum created by Glasgow Life in the 21st century, houses the city’s impressive transport and technology collections. These collections reflect Glasgow’s significant contributions to heavy industries like shipbuilding, train manufacturing, and engineering. As you explore the museum, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the city’s industrial past and its impact on the world.

After your visit to the museum, take a leisurely stroll along the River Clyde, where you’ll find a mix of modern architecture and historic landmarks. The river has played a crucial role in Glasgow’s development, serving as a vital trade route and a hub for shipbuilding. As you walk, imagine the bustling activity that once took place along the riverbanks, and appreciate the city’s transformation into a vibrant cultural center.

A Taste of Scotland: Whisky Tours and Tastings

No visit to Glasgow would be complete without experiencing the city’s renowned whisky culture. This weekend, embark on a whisky tour that will take you to some of the finest distilleries in the region. Start your day with a visit to the Glengoyne Distillery, where you’ll delve into the whisky-making process and enjoy a tutored tasting of three whiskies from the Glengoyne Collection. The tour begins at 10:30 am, so be sure to arrive early to fully appreciate the experience.

After your visit to Glengoyne, head to Loch Lomond for a scenic cruise with Sweeney’s Cruise Co. This one-hour circular tour of Loch Lomond’s South basin offers breathtaking views of the magnificent Ben Lomond and several stately homes and castles along the shoreline. The cruise departs at 1:00 pm, providing the perfect opportunity to relax and take in the stunning scenery.

In the afternoon, make your way to the Clydeside Distillery for the Clydeside Tour, which begins at 3:00 pm. Here, you’ll explore the dockside story and learn about the handcrafted spirit that has made this distillery famous. The tour includes tastings of the Clydeside new make and two whiskies matured in first-fill Bourbon casks and first-fill Sherry butts. As you savor each sip, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the art of whisky-making and the rich history behind it.

Review (2024-07-19): This was the best experience of my life! The whisky tour was amazing from start to finish, and our driver, James, made the day truly special.

Crafting Your Own Whisky Blend

For those looking to create a truly unique souvenir, the Whisky Blending Experience at Glengoyne offers the perfect opportunity. With guidance from a Distillery Ambassador, you’ll blend five single cask whiskies to create a personalized bottle of Glengoyne Single Malt. This exclusive experience is available on both May 24th and 25th, with sessions starting at 11:15 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm.

During the experience, you’ll begin with a comprehensive guided tour of Glengoyne Distillery and No.1 Warehouse. Following the tour, you’ll settle into the Sample Room at the Distillery Manager’s House for an interactive whisky-making session. Here, you’ll step into the shoes of the Malt Master, expertly balancing flavors from various casks to create your own unique blend. The result is a 200ml bottle of cask strength, un-chillfiltered Glengoyne Highland Single Malt, complete with a record of your recipe.

This hands-on experience not only allows you to craft a one-of-a-kind whisky but also provides a deeper understanding of the intricate process behind whisky production. As you leave with your personalized bottle, you’ll carry with you a piece of Scotland’s rich whisky heritage, a testament to your journey through Glasgow’s cultural landscape.

Whether you’re a whisky enthusiast or a history buff, Glasgow offers a wealth of experiences that will leave you with lasting memories. From exploring the city’s industrial past to savoring its world-class whiskies, this weekend promises to be an unforgettable adventure.
