• Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - Next, visit one of the largest mosques in Cairo, the El Sultan Hassan Mosque, also known as Madrasa El Sultan Hassan, founded by Sultan Hassan in 1356 A.D. The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a grand Mamluk era mosque and madrassa near The Citadel in Cairo. Construction began in 757 AH/1356 CE and concluded three years later “without even a single day of idleness”. At the time, the mosque was notable for its impressive size and innovative architectural features. Commissioned by a sultan of modest stature, al-Maqrizi noted the mosque contained several “wonders of construction”. It was designed to include schools for all four Sunni schools of thought: Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanafi, and Hanbali.
• Al-Azhar Mosque - Proceed to Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo, also known as the mosque of the most resplendent. It is located in Islamic Cairo, Egypt. Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah of the Fatimid Caliphate commissioned its construction for the newly established capital city in 970. Its name is believed to reference the Islamic prophet Muhammad’s daughter Fatimah, a revered figure in Islam, who was given the title az-Zahrā, meaning the shining or resplendent one. It was the first mosque established in Cairo, a city now known as “the City of a Thousand Minarets”.

• Al-Rifa’i Mosque - Follow this with a visit to another prominent mosque, Al-Rifa’i Mosque. This was part of a significant campaign by the 19th-century rulers of Egypt to associate themselves with the perceived glory of earlier periods in Egypt’s Islamic history and to modernize the city.
