- Pyramids of Giza - The Giza pyramid complex, also known as the Giza Necropolis, is located on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt. It features the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their respective pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza. These structures were constructed during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. The site also includes several cemeteries and remnants of a workers’ village.
Situated at the edge of the Western Desert, the site is approximately 9 km (5 mi) west of the Nile River in Giza and about 13 km (8 mi) southwest of Cairo’s city center.
The Great Pyramid and the Pyramid of Khafre are the largest pyramids built in ancient Egypt and have long been symbols of ancient Egypt in Western culture. They gained popularity during Hellenistic times when the Great Pyramid was listed by Antipater of Sidon as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple revealed several statues of Khafre, discovered in a well in the temple’s floor by Mariette in 1860.
- Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex comprises a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple.
- Great Sphinx - The Great Sphinx is located on the east side of the complex. Egyptologists generally agree that the head of the Great Sphinx represents Khafre. In addition to these major monuments, there are several smaller satellite structures, known as “queens” pyramids, causeways, and valley pyramids.
- The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - Commonly referred to as the Egyptian Museum or Museum of Cairo, this museum in Cairo, Egypt, boasts an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts. It houses 120,000 items, with a significant portion on display and the rest in storage. Constructed in 1901 by the Italian company Garozzo-Zaffarani and designed by French architect Marcel Dourgnon, it is one of the largest museums in the region. As of March 2019, the museum is open to the public. In 2020, it is set to be replaced by the new Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza.
The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities holds many significant pieces of ancient Egyptian history and contains the world’s largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities. The Egyptian government established the museum in 1835 near the Ezbekeyah Garden.
- Khan Al-Khalili - Khan el-Khalili (Arabic: خان الخليلي) is a renowned bazaar and souq located in the historic center of Cairo, Egypt. This bazaar district is a major attraction for both tourists and locals. It is also home to numerous Egyptian artisans and workshops producing traditional crafts and souvenirs.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - Khufu’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, now buried beneath the village of Nazlet el-Samman. Diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, but the site remains unexcavated. The valley temple was connected to a causeway, which was largely destroyed during the village’s construction.
- Gizeh Plateau - The Giza Plateau (Arabic: هضبة الجيزة) is a limestone plateau in Giza, Egypt, home to the Fourth Dynasty Giza pyramid complex, which includes the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, the Great Sphinx, several cemeteries, a workers’ village, and an industrial complex. It forms the northernmost part of the 16,000 ha Pyramid Fields on the Western Desert edge of the Nile Valley, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Memphis and its Necropolis.
