-
Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - Follow this with a visit to one of the largest mosques in Cairo, the El Sultan Hassan Mosque, also known as
Madrasa El Sultan Hassan, founded by Sultan Hassan in 1356 A.D. The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a massive Mamluk-era mosque and madrassa located near The Citadel in Cairo. Its construction began in 757 AH/1356 CE and was completed three years later “without even a single day of idleness.” At the time of its construction, the mosque was remarkable for its size and innovative architectural elements. Commissioned by a sultan of a brief and relatively unimpressive profile, al-Maqrizi noted that the mosque contained several “wonders of construction.” It was designed to include schools for all four Sunni schools of thought: Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanafi, and Hanbali. - Al-Rifa’i Mosque - The Al-Rifa’i Mosque is located opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, dating from around 1361, and was architecturally conceived as a complement to the older structure. This was part of a vast campaign by the 19th-century rulers of Egypt to associate themselves with the perceived glory of earlier periods in Egypt’s Islamic history and modernize the city.
- Al-Azhar Mosque - Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo, also known as the mosque of the most resplendent, is located in Islamic Cairo, Egypt. Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah of the Fatimid Caliphate commissioned its construction for the newly established capital city in 970. Its name is thought to allude to the Islamic prophet Muhammad’s daughter Fatimah, a revered figure in Islam who was given the title az-Zahrā, meaning the shining or resplendent one. It was the first mosque established in Cairo, a city now known as “the City of a Thousand Minarets.”
- Al Emam El Hussein Mosque - The Al-Hussein Mosque, also known as the Mosque of al-Imam al-Husayn (Arabic: مسجد الإمام ٱلحُسين) and the Mosque of Sayyidna al-Husayn, is a mosque and mausoleum of Husayn ibn Ali, originally built in 1154 and later reconstructed in 1874. The mosque is located in Cairo, Egypt, near the Khan El-Khalili bazaar and the famous Al Azhar Mosque, in an area known as Al-Hussain. It is considered one of the holiest Islamic sites in Egypt. Some Shia Muslims believe that Husayn’s head (ra’s mubarak) is buried on the mosque grounds, where a mausoleum is located today, and is considered a remnant of the Fatimid architecture in the building.
- Khan Al-Khalili - Khan el-Khalili (Arabic: خان الخليلي) is a renowned bazaar and souq in the historic center of Cairo, Egypt. Established as a trade center during the Mamluk era and named after one of its several historic caravanserais, the bazaar district has become one of Cairo’s main attractions for tourists and Egyptians alike. It is also home to many Egyptian artisans and workshops involved in producing traditional crafts and souvenirs. The name Khan el-Khalili historically referred to a single building in the area; today, it refers to the entire shopping district.
