It is a limestone statue, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and a human head. The face of the Sphinx is generally believed to represent Pharaoh Khafra.

Memphis is the oldest capital in Egypt, founded by Pharaoh Menes. It was the capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom and remained an important city, occupying a strategic position at the mouth of the Nile Delta. Memphis was home to many kings. See the huge statues of Ramses the Great (Sleeping Statue), weighing about 120 tons of limestone. Also, see the second Sphinx in Egypt, weighing about 120 tons of alabaster, along with many other statues.
