- Pyramids of Giza - The tour begins at 8:00 am with a pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza by a tour guide for a full-day excursion to the Giza Pyramids. Here, you will explore the Great Pyramids - Cheops, Chephren, and Mykerinos. The Giza Pyramid Complex, also known as the Giza Necropolis, is located on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt. It includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza. These structures were built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. The site also features several cemeteries and the remains of a workers’ village.
The site is situated at the edge of the Western Desert, approximately 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) west of the Nile River in Giza, and about 13 kilometers (8 miles) southwest of Cairo’s city center.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - Khufu’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, now buried beneath the village of Nazlet el-Samman. Diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, but the site remains unexcavated. The valley temple was linked to a causeway, which was largely destroyed during the village’s construction.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex comprises a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple yielded several statues of Khafre, some of which were found in a well in the temple’s floor by Mariette in 1860. Additional statues were discovered during subsequent excavations by Sieglin (1909–10), Junker, and Reisner.
- Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple. The mortuary temple also revealed several statues of Menkaure.
- Great Sphinx - Visit the Sphinx, located near the Valley Temple. The Sphinx is the oldest and largest in Egypt, featuring a lion’s body and a human head, symbolizing power and intellect. The face of the Sphinx is a portrait of Khafre, who constructed the Middle Pyramid of Giza.
- Cairo Citadel - The Citadel of Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi (Saladin) is one of the most iconic monuments in Islamic Cairo and among the most impressive medieval fortresses. Its strategic location on the Muqattam Hills provided a formidable defensive position and offers, as it still does today, an unrestricted panoramic view of Cairo.
Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi initiated the construction of a fortress over the Muqattam Hills in (572 AH/1176 AD), but it was completed during the reign of Sultan al-Kamel ibn al-Adel (604 AH/1207 AD), who made it the official residence of Egypt’s rulers. In the mid-nineteenth century, Khedive Ismail moved the official residence to Abdeen Palace in downtown Cairo. The Citadel has witnessed significant events in Egyptian history from its construction to the end of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty.
- Coptic Cairo - Next, visit Old Cairo, known as Christian Coptic Cairo, one of the most important locations visited by the Holy Family. The spiritual impact of their presence is still felt, although their stay was brief. The Governor of what was then Fustat, enraged by the idols’ collapse at Jesus’ approach, sought to kill the Child. However, they found refuge in a cave, above which the Church of Abu Serga (St Sergius) was later built. This area, including the Fort of Babylon, is a pilgrimage destination for Egyptians and Christians worldwide. The district exudes an air of piety and devotion. Visitors can enter the Church of Abu-Sergah and St. Barbara, the Hanging Church, and the old Jewish synagogue - Ben Ezra Synagogue.
- Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - Known as the “Hanging Church,” it was built over the ruins of Old Cairo’s Roman fort, near the Coptic Museum.
The church consists of a court divided into four wings separated by three rows of marble columns. A wooden semi-circular vault covers the main court. The church also features an inscribed granite baptismal tank and a marble pulpit supported by ten columns adorned with mosaic. The pulpit dates to the eleventh century AD.
The east side houses five altars topped by wooden domes. The church’s ceiling resembles Noah’s Ark. The Hanging Church is renowned for the icons decorating its walls, the oldest dating to the fifteenth century AD, while most others date to the late eighteenth century AD.
- Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus - The Church of Saint Sergius and Bacchus, also known as Abu Serga, is built upon an ancient Roman fort in Old Cairo. The church’s history is debated, with some scholars dating it to the late fourth to early fifth centuries AD, while others suggest the 17th century AD.
This church holds special religious significance among Coptic churches due to its association with the Holy Family’s journey through Egypt. It is named after renowned early fourth-century AD saints, Sergius and Bacchus, who were martyred at al-Resafa in Syria for their Christian beliefs.
- Synagogue Ben Ezra - The Ben Ezra Synagogue (Hebrew: בית כנסת בן עזרא; Arabic: معبد بن عزرا), sometimes called the El-Geniza Synagogue (בית כנסת אל גניזה) or the Synagogue of the Levantines (al-Shamiyin), is located in the Fustat area of Old Cairo, Egypt. According to local folklore, it is situated on the site where baby Moses was found.
This synagogue’s geniza, or storeroom, was discovered in the 19th century to contain a treasure of forgotten Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judeo-Arabic secular and sacred manuscripts. The collection, known as the Cairo Geniza, was brought to the University of Cambridge in England at the instigation of Solomon Schechter. It is now divided among several academic libraries, with the majority housed at the Cambridge University Library.
- Khan el-Khalili - Khan el-Khalili is a renowned bazaar and souq in Cairo’s historic center, Egypt. Established as a trade center during the Mamluk era and named after one of its historic caravanserais, the bazaar district has become a major attraction for tourists and Egyptians alike. It is also home to many Egyptian artisans and workshops producing traditional crafts and souvenirs.
The tour concludes with a drop-off at the customer’s hotel in Cairo.
