• Great Sphinx - The Great Sphinx of Giza, also known as The Terrifying One or literally “Father of Dread,” is commonly referred to as the Sphinx of Giza or simply the Sphinx. This limestone statue depicts a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with a lion’s body and a human head.[1] It faces directly from west to east and is situated on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The Sphinx’s face is widely believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre.

Carved from the bedrock, the Sphinx’s original form has been restored with layers of blocks. It measures 73 meters (240 ft) in length from paw to tail, 20.21 meters (66.31 ft) in height from the base to the top of the head, and 19 meters (62 ft) in width at its rear haunches. It is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and is generally thought to have been constructed by the ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during Pharaoh Khafre’s reign (c. 2558–2532 BC).

The specific pharaoh being honored is unknown, as there are no inscriptions to provide information. The facial features suggest that the Sphinx may honor Hatshepsut, Amenhotep II, or Amenhotep.
