Facing directly from West to East, it is located on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The Sphinx’s face is generally thought to represent Pharaoh Khafre. Carved from the bedrock, the original form of the Sphinx has been restored with layers of blocks. It measures 73 m (240 ft) in length from paw to tail, 20 m (66 ft) in height from the base to the top of the head, and 19 m (62 ft) in width at its rear haunches. It is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and is widely believed to have been constructed by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during Pharaoh Khafre’s reign (c. 2558–2532 BC).
