Guided Day Tour to (Alexandria)
Cairo - Enjoy an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Cairo or Giza and a comfortable transfer to Alexandria, 200 KM west of Cairo.
Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, dating from the second century A.D., are unique for their plan and decoration, which is a mixture of Egyptian and Greco-Roman elements. Excavations at the site began in 1892, but the catacombs were not discovered until 1900 when, by mere chance, a donkey drawing a cart fell into a pit, leading to their discovery. The tomb consists of three stories cut into the rock, but the lower one is filled with subsoil water, and for this reason, most of it has been filled with sand.
Pompey’s Pillar - Continue your tour to Pompey’s Pillar, constructed outside of the imperial capitals of Rome and Constantinople. Pompey’s Pillar in Alexandria is the only known free-standing column in Roman Egypt. Moreover, it is not composed of drums. It is indeed one of the largest ancient monoliths.
Bibliotheca Alexandrina - Visit Alexandria’s ancient library, which was one of the greatest of all classical institutions. While replacing it might seem a Herculean task, the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina manages this with aplomb. Opened in 2002, this impressive piece of modern architecture is a deliberate attempt to rekindle the brilliance of the original center of learning and culture. The complex has become one of Egypt’s major cultural venues and a stage for numerous international performers and is home to a collection of brilliant museums.
Fort Qaitbey - Fort Qaitbay in Alexandria is indeed one of the most important defensive strongholds, not only in Egypt but also along the Mediterranean Sea coast. Moreover, it formed an important part of the fortification system of Alexandria. It was built in the 15th century A.C. Qaitbay Fort Alexandria is situated at the entrance of the eastern harbor on the eastern point of Pharos Island. It was erected on the exact site of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria. The Alexandria Lighthouse was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The lighthouse continued to function until the time of the Arab conquest.
