Girona is traversed by the rivers Ter, Güell, Galligans, and Oñar, and is situated 75 meters above sea level.
The city gained fame as its old town was used as a filming location for some episodes of “Game of Thrones.”
The old town is bordered by the Paseo de la Muralla, a coastal walkway along the ancient Carolingian walls (9th Century) and those from the late Middle Ages (14th and 15th Centuries).
Noteworthy monuments include El Call, one of Spain’s best-preserved old Jewish quarters, and the colorful Casas del Oñar, located on the banks of the river Oñar, near the Cathedral of Santa Maria, which boasts the widest Gothic nave in the world.
- Girona Cathedral - The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Girona, constructed between the 9th and 18th Centuries, showcases three main architectural styles: Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque.
Its Romanesque cloister features intricately decorated capitals. The wide Gothic nave is notable for being the widest Gothic nave and the second widest in the world, following Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.
Access to the temple is via a grand staircase built during Bishop Pontich’s time, between 1686 and 1699, with ninety steps divided into three sections, and a stone balustrade on its sides.
The Cathedral’s main facade is Baroque.
- Casc antic Ullà - Girona’s old town, the heart of the Roman city of Gerunda, holds the city’s most significant artistic heritage.
It is enclosed by substantial remnants of the old wall, which can be explored via the Paseo Arqueológico (Archeological Walk), offering a stunning view over the city.
In addition to civil buildings like the House of the Archdeacon and the Episcopal Palace, the old town also features important religious structures. These include the Romanesque Monastery of San Pedro de Galligans, the Chapel of San Nicolás, and the Basilica of San Félix, with its slender and unique Gothic tower truncated by lightning.
In the cathedral square, notable monuments such as the Casa Pastors, a Renaissance building now serving as the courthouse, and the Pia Almoina can be found.
- Cases de l’Onyar - Las Casas del Oñar (Houses of Oñar), also known as the Houses of the River or Hanging Houses, have facades facing the Oñar river.
They are situated between la Rambla and Calle Argentería in Girona’s old town.
This complex is part of the Inventario del Patrimonio Arquitectónico de Cataluña.
All their river-facing facades are painted in a color palette designed by Enric Ansesa, Jaume Faixó, and architects J. Fuses and J. Viader.
One of the most notable houses is the Casa Masó (Masó House), the birthplace of Girona architect Rafael Masó i Valentí. Located at number 29 Calle Ballesteries in Girona, it symbolizes the evolution of the “Noucentisme” artistic movement in the city.
Since 2006, it has housed the headquarters of la Fundación Rafael Masó (the Rafael Masó Foundation). Its facade is distinguished by its white and blue colors, making it stand out.
- Patronat Call de Girona - The Jewish History Museum of Girona is located in the Centro Bonastruc ça Porta, in the heart of Girona’s old Jewish quarter.
The building stands where the old synagogue and its annexes were in the 15th Century.
The museum’s primary aim is to preserve and share the history of Catalonia’s Jewish communities, which played a significant role in the country’s historical trajectory and cultural and scientific development during the Middle Ages.
- Passeig de la Muralla - Girona’s Roman wall was constructed to protect the city from invading armies. As a border city, it held a strategic geographical position.
In the 1st century B.C., the Romans built a formidable fortress around an almost triangular perimeter. It was a type of acropolis, la Fuerza Vieja, well-protected by walls made of large stone blocks. This was the first enclosure of Girona, remaining unchanged until the 10th Century.

Figueres - Travel from Girona to Figueres takes about 40 minutes.
Travel from Figueres to Barcelona takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Time spent in Figueres: Around 2 hours
Figueres is a town in the province of Girona, near the French border. It is renowned as the birthplace of artist Salvador Dalí.
The most significant site in Figueres is the Teatro-Museo Dalí, the final stop on this tour.
- Dali Theatre-Museum - This museum is dedicated to the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. It is located at la Plaza Gala-Salvador Dalí in Figueres.
The project began in the 1960s when the mayor of Figueres proposed creating a space to honor Dalí’s work and character, who was internationally recognized at that time. The museum opened in 1974, but its construction was completed fifteen years later, upon the artist’s death. This architectural complex is considered the last great artwork of the Catalan artist, a Total Work of Art.
For many years, the space now occupied by the museum was used by the Municipal Theatre of the City, a neoclassical 19th-century building.
The exterior features a striking red wall with giant eggs on top, making the building stand out. Inside, it houses artistic heritage donated by Gala and Dalí. Among its most important pieces are Galatea of the Spheres (1952) and The Palace of the Wind (1973).
