Perched atop a hill resembling a stronghold and overseeing the meeting point of the Onyar and Ter rivers, Girona is an ancient city encircled by walls. It holds a revered position as a provincial capital and has a rich, extensive history. Initially established by the Iberians, it was later christened Gerunda by the Romans who made it a vital station on the Via Augusta that connected Iberia and Rome. The city is widely recognised for its massive 15th-century cathedral that features the largest unsupported gothic arch on the globe and forms a distinguishing part of the city landscape. Nonetheless, much of the city’s allure is in wandering through its medieval lanes, particularly in the captivating Jewish sector. A popular city landmark is ‘ Pont de les Peixeteries Velles’, a bridge over the Onyar River constructed by Gustave Eiffel. This thorough tour (around 3 hours in duration) will introduce you to Girona’s significant monuments, historical chronicles, Jewish roots, and even its fables.
