Ghandruk - The adventure starts after breakfast with a two-hour local bus ride, accompanied by a guide, to Nayapol (a private car takes just 90 minutes). From Nayapol village, the trek commences through the semi-tropical forests of the lower Annapurnas. Initially, the path is level, but it gradually ascends. This area is the traditional home of the Gurung people, leading to the village of Ghandruk. Throughout the journey, there are breathtaking views of Fishtail Mountain, the iconic landmark of the Annapurnas. Overnight accommodation is at a local guesthouse in Ghandruk.
TREK TO TADAPANI (elev. 2540 m/8,333 ft.)
Tadapani - The trek continues into dense, dark rhododendron forests that blanket the hills. This is the jungle of the Annapurnas, where monkeys are often seen playing in the trees. Along the route, there are numerous outcroppings offering increasingly closer views of the towering peaks of the Annapurnas, home to Annapurna I, the 10th highest mountain in the world. The destination is the quaint village of Tadapani, meaning “far water,” as it served as a water source for nearby villages. Although small, the village offers a cozy guesthouse for the night.
TREK TO GHOREPANI (elev. 2775 m/9,104 ft.)
Ghorepani - The journey leads out of the jungle to areas with spectacular views of the Annapurna peaks. Stops along the way provide opportunities to photograph Mt. Dhaulagiri (the 7th highest mountain in the world), Nilgiri, Tilicho Peak, Himchuli, and other snowcapped peaks of the Annapurna Range. The destination is the village of Ghorepani, meaning “horse water,” a historical stop for travelers to water their horses on the ancient salt trails to and from Tibet. After approximately four hours of travel, the night is spent in this larger village, known for its scenic beauty and warm hospitality.
TREK TO POONHILL AND DRIVE TO POKHARA
Poon Hill - An early rise is necessary to reach the top of Poon Hill (elev. 3221 m) before sunrise to witness the first rays of the radiant sun. Initially, the horizon is a dark gray until the sun’s first rays emerge above the Himalayas. The red rays gradually turn the snowcapped peaks red as the sun ascends into the brilliant blue sky. As it rises, the peaks’ colors shift from red to orange-red, eventually becoming the most dazzling white imaginable.
