- Salinas de Anana - Recognized as one of the world’s most significant cultural, architectural, environmental, landscape, and archaeological sites.
From today’s viewpoint, it seems almost unimaginable how salt, now so plentiful and inexpensive, held such historical significance. It’s important to remember that salt was and remains crucial in numerous industrial processes, as well as in human and animal nutrition. Before the advent of industrial cooling systems, it was one of the most effective methods for preserving food.
Salt has been the catalyst for many wars and peace treaties, for both demise and triumph, for wealth and poverty, and for the rise and fall of towns and cities. It has been a source of greed but also of joy among people.
Valle Salado stands as one of the finest examples globally of salt’s history, known since ancient times as “white gold.” The natural emergence of salt springs led to the establishment of a settlement in the area, which has thrived continuously for thousands of years. This settlement, centered around salt production, has adapted to the conditions and nuances of each historical era.
- Vitoria-Gasteiz - Situated in Spain’s Basque Country, Vitoria-Gasteiz may not be as famous as Bilbao or San Sebastian, but it is certainly worth visiting. It boasts its own modern art museum and a stunning cathedral.
- Plaza de la Virgen Blanca - Plaza de la Virgen Blanca is one of the oldest gathering places in Vitoria-Gasteiz, located in Spain’s Basque Country. At its center stands the monument to La Batalla de Vitoria, commemorating a battle that occurred in the city in 1813 during the Napoleonic wars.
- Escoriaza-Esquivel Palace - Commissioned by Fernán López de Escoriaza, the physician to England’s King Henry VIII, and his wife, Victoria de Anda y Esquivel, this palace was constructed in the mid-16th century. Its architectural and decorative opulence makes it one of the finest examples of civil Renaissance-style architecture.
The palace, crafted from masonry stone, is organized around a square courtyard encircled by a double series of arches on three sides and a staircase. The columns are adorned with numerous decorative elements. Notably, the main façade, facing a small square, features a Plateresque-style section with busts of the landlord and his wife.
- Catedral de Santa Maria - Experience a journey through time and feel like a character from a Ken Follett novel at the Santa María Cathedral in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
