• Umana Yana - Situated on High Street in Kingston, Georgetown, Umana Yana is a term from the Wai Wai people, referring to the large benabs used as communal meeting spaces. The first Umana Yana in Georgetown was constructed in 1972. Around 60 Wai Wai men, led by Chief Elka, were brought from Konashen, Rupununi, along with essential materials, to build it. The current Umana Yana was completed by a team of 35 men from Maskenari, South Rupununi, under the guidance of Toshao Paul Chekema, Chief Elka’s nephew, who finished the benab’s roof. It stands as the most significant Amerindian structure in Georgetown.
• Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology - Located on Main Street, Georgetown, the Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology is housed in a three-story colonial timber building from the late 19th to early 20th century, designed by British Guiana architect Mr. John Bradshaw Sharples. This building was home to several notable individuals before being acquired by the British Government in 1942. It served as public offices until it became the Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology, named after the renowned English anthropologist Walter Roth, who settled in British Guiana in the early 1900s. The building features an enclosed gallery, Demerara windows, and a tower, and the museum highlights the heritage of Guyana’s Amerindian people.
