• TR7 1EW - Join your guide at Surf Sanctuary, located at The Headland Hotel in Newquay. After gearing up, you’ll be introduced to safe spearfishing, covering equipment usage, safety protocols, fish identification, legal size limits, and ethical harvesting.

Instead of visiting the same spot daily, your guide will evaluate the wind, swell, tide, and underwater visibility to choose the best location. Depending on the conditions, this could be in Newquay or another part of Cornwall’s coastline.

Once in the water, you’ll learn effective finning, breathing, duck diving, and underwater movement before advancing to hunting techniques. You’ll receive guidance on approaching fish, taking safe shots, loading and unloading the speargun, and understanding the behavior of local species around reefs and kelp forests.

Throughout the session, you’ll receive ongoing coaching tailored to your experience level. If successful, you’ll also learn how to dispatch, bleed, transport, and prepare your catch for the table. Each session is customized to the day’s conditions, with the venue and approach chosen to optimize safety, water clarity, and hunting opportunities.

With a surfing background dating back to 1997 and professional ocean sports instruction since 2003, Dom merges a First Class degree in Natural Sciences with RLSS lifeguard and RYA VHF certifications, offering scientific insight, fieldcraft, and expert judgement in every session.
