Sipping Through History: A Moonshine Adventure in Gatlinburg
Drawn by the allure of Tennessee’s rich moonshine heritage, I embarked on a journey to Gatlinburg for a unique distillery tour. What awaited was an unforgettable blend of history, culture, and camaraderie.
A Journey Through Time and Taste
As I stepped into the heart of Gatlinburg, a wave of nostalgia washed over me. The quaint charm of this small town nestled in the Smoky Mountains reminded me of the countless road trips I took with my family across America. This time, however, I was here for a different kind of adventure—a Moonshine and Wine Tour that promised a unique blend of history, culture, and flavor.
Our hosts, Mike and Jen, greeted us with warm smiles and an infectious enthusiasm for the rich heritage of Tennessee’s moonshine and whiskey. Their passion was palpable, and it was clear that they were dedicated to providing an unforgettable experience. As we embarked on our journey, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of camaraderie with my fellow travelers, united by our curiosity and a shared love for the open road.
Discovering the Art of Moonshine
Our first stop was the Tennessee Shine Company, where we were treated to a tasting that spanned the spectrum from smooth, cream-based flavors to the bold intensity of 135-proof moonshine. The experience was both exhilarating and enlightening, as Mike and Jen guided us through the nuances of each flavor, sharing stories of the old-timers who perfected the craft in the hills of Tennessee.
At Doc Collier, Pepper, our lively host, took us on a behind-the-scenes tour that was as informative as it was entertaining. We were even given the opportunity to sample a yet-to-be-released product, a testament to the exclusive nature of this tour. The sense of discovery and the thrill of tasting something new brought back memories of my younger days, exploring the unknown with wide-eyed wonder.
A Toast to New Friendships
Our final destination was the Sugarlands Distilling Company, where the atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming. Autumn, our host, ensured that we had a fantastic time, her humor and warmth making the experience all the more enjoyable. The highlight of our visit was meeting some of the cast from the show “Moonshiners,” a delightful surprise that added an extra layer of excitement to our day.
As we sipped on moonshine cocktails and shared stories with newfound friends, I was reminded of the power of travel to connect us with others and with ourselves. The Moonshine and Wine Tour was more than just a tasting experience; it was a journey through time, a celebration of tradition, and a testament to the enduring spirit of adventure that lives within us all.
