From Waves to Wildlife: A Day with Capuchins and Crocodiles in Garabito
In search of a unique adventure, I traded my surfboard for a day with capuchins and crocodiles in Garabito. Join me as I explore the vibrant wildlife and hidden beaches of Costa Rica.
A Day with Capuchins and Crocodiles
The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I found myself in the vibrant town of Jaco, ready to embark on a journey that promised encounters with some of Costa Rica’s most fascinating wildlife. As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve spent countless days chasing waves and exploring the hidden gems of Central America, but this time, I was trading my surfboard for a chance to meet the capuchin monkeys and crocodiles of Garabito.
Our guide, Geriold, greeted us with a warm smile and an infectious enthusiasm for the day’s adventure. We set off in our own vehicle, following him to the first destination—a sanctuary for the white-faced capuchin monkeys. As we arrived, the air was filled with the sounds of the jungle, and it wasn’t long before we spotted the playful creatures swinging through the trees. Geriold’s respect for the animals and the local community was evident as he shared insights into the monkeys’ social structures and behaviors. A few curious capuchins even ventured close enough to climb on us, a thrilling experience that left us all in awe.
Crocodiles and Local Flavors
Our next stop was the famous Crocodile Bridge in Tarcoles. Having passed by this spot on previous trips, I was eager to learn more about the massive reptiles that call this river home. Geriold didn’t disappoint, regaling us with stories of the crocodiles, including the legendary Mike Tyson, whose size and presence were unmistakable. Standing on the bridge, watching these ancient creatures glide through the water, was a humbling reminder of the wild beauty that Costa Rica has to offer.
With our appetites whetted by the morning’s adventures, we headed to a local soda for lunch. The food was a delightful surprise, a true taste of Costa Rican cuisine that left us all satisfied and ready for more exploration. As someone who often writes about the best beachside eateries, this meal was a standout, a testament to the rich culinary traditions of the region.
Sloths, Sunsets, and Serenity
Our final destination was a hidden beach, where Geriold had heard rumors of sloth sightings. True to his word, we were soon gazing up at the trees, spotting not only sloths but also another group of capuchin monkeys, an iguana, and a coati. Each sighting was a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that makes Costa Rica a paradise for nature lovers.
As the sun began to set, Geriold set up chairs for us to relax and soak in the tranquil beauty of the beach. We chatted about the day’s adventures, the waves I’d be chasing next, and the simple joys of life on the road. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with wonder and discovery.
Reflecting on the experience, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to connect with the natural world in such a meaningful way. Geriold’s passion for the animals and the land was inspiring, and his kindness made the trip truly unforgettable. For anyone seeking a unique adventure in Costa Rica, the Monkey Sanctuary Tour is a must-do. Pura Vida!
